I've had hens show up with chicks before. Usually it's because I'm just really bad at looking for nests, or in my ranging flock, I just assume one was taken by a predator. Although I'll be honest, I had one just 3 days ago show up with a chick that I had genuinely forgotten I still had since she...
Looks like she has both eyes. She has a bit of a harder time getting o her feet if she's knocked onto her back, but nothing to worry about from what I can tell. The attacking hen isn't causing any other issues. She's been around the duckling since it hatched, still not sure what set her off
As long as that hen doesn't do it again, I think she'll heal just fine. It was just bizarre, I have never had that aggressive of a response happen from a hen towards any other bird before. I really don't know what triggered her like that. The duckling has her legs back under her though, amd is...
No, chicken hen, but not the mama hen. My ducklings currently are all raised by chickens. I meant that mama hen was three feet away during the attack and only got upset when I came into the picture, she didn't seem to even hear her baby screaming
Considering how she looked when I scooped her up...
Had a hen hellbent on killing a preteen duckling this morning. Poor thing was already rather stunned when I snatched her up, and was bleeding a lot from her eyes and neck. Had to run to work, hoping she's still okayish when I get home. Mama apparently only cares about me interacting with her...
The moving enclosures is odd, and hens don't really move chicks like that. But I've had plenty of hens steal chicks, usually from other hens. Keep an eye on them, but odds are they'll wind up okay
