Our girls won't eat layer pellets and act like they are starving all the time

Only problem that may occur is if the grower is medicated, and therefore eggs usually can't be consumed. Non-medicated would be ok though

5 Week Old Barred Rock - Pullet or Cockerel?

Wow these are way more feathered then our almost 6 weekers!

    broody chicken

Same here. Fairly new to broody....our last lot were commercial laying breeds. We've got Sussex and australorp now. Loving the prettier hens. We had an australorp go broody and sat her on a friends fertilised eggs. One chicken is crazy clunky since they hatched and has joined the 'family'...

    broody chicken

Try sitting her on fertilized eggs (from a friend or look online). Less at stake then if you get day olds. You may end up with Roos too though, so you'll need a plan for them.

Will a hen steal another hen's baby chick?

We had an australorp hen hatch out three chicks 9 days ago. The day the chicks hatched a Sussex hen (which had shown no signs of brooding beforehand) started showing crazy amounts of interest. She joined mum in the nest and was pulling the hatching eggs underneath herself. I locked her out...

Our girls won't eat layer pellets and act like they are starving all the time

Yes bean sprout, that's correct. I accidentally purchased a grower crumble that had an antibiotic for coccidiosis in it. As our 'mum' was also eating it we can't eat her eggs for two weeks until it's cleared her system. Very frustrating throwing out all those longed for eggs. If they're...

Our girls won't eat layer pellets and act like they are starving all the time

Lol. I meant the way they act towards it more than the nutritional side....our chickens and corn is like our kids and candy!. Ours go crazy with excitement when the kids take the corn out to them. It must taste better because like the scraps, they'll always take it over the pellets....my point...

Mumma hen attacking 7week old chicks

Thanks all. Mum is seperated at the moment. Unfortunately only worked it all out at nightfall. Hubby is away until late tomorrow night but I'll get everything ready for first thing Saturday. (Saturday had been the plan.) Was worried about predators as we live on the edge of town we get...

    Can pullets eat layer pellets?

Ours contains 'lasalocid sodium' and yes it's for coccidiosis. Didn't even think to ask when I was buying it, and they got it/loaded it. I only realised a few days later. Will look into it tomorrow and try and get a replacement. Thanks

Mumma hen attacking 7week old chicks

Thanks. Once I saw it was mum I was fairly sure that was the case. We purchased mum and chicks to start our flock so no other introductions are required. We've kept them contained to coop until now as we were worried about predators, will finish the run off in the next few days so they can...

Hens are scratching out bedding from nests

My hen scratches through the hay we use looking for bugs, she makes a massive mess everytime we refill the nesting boxes! Could this be the cause?

    Can pullets eat layer pellets?

(Sorry I wasn't very clear in my original post. The eggs are mumma hens first after hatching her clutch 7 weeks ago. I didn't realise at the time but I purchased a 'medicated' grower mix which can't be fed to layers. Looks like I may have to try and find an 'unmedicated' one so we can...

    Can pullets eat layer pellets?

I could scramble them for the chickens so they're not wasted....is anything added to the eggs when scrambling for the chooks??

    Can pullets eat layer pellets?

I'd love to eat the eggs, but the mum/layer is eating the 'grower' food alongside her chicks which states eggs shouldn't be eaten for two weeks after consumption. As she's in the coop with them we can't feed her seperately. Was hoping there's a happy medium to feed both the chicks and mum.

Our girls won't eat layer pellets and act like they are starving all the time

Beware, some crumbles and 'grower' feeds contain ingredients which can't be fed to layers....in fact eggs can't be consumed for two weeks after feeding of these has been ceased in some cases. Read the packaging carefully! Cut out the scraps and corn. Corn is like chicken candy. We use a little...
