    dead chicks

Very bummed. My son's two were in there. He worked really hard to earn them. Thankfully he is taking it really well. I asked him if we should replace them now or wait until next year and he said next year so we can redesign the brooder. He is only nine years old.

    dead chicks

Today I found all the chicks in the outside brooder dead. They were 3-4 weeks old. An easter egger had managed to push down the wire and slide into the box yesterday. Knowing they had plenty of food and water, I didn't check on them last night. Well, I found her in there and all nine babies...

    spraying atrizine or spectracide

I found on the spectracide answer section of their site that chickens can go in the area after it dries, but can't find anything about the eggs.

    spraying atrizine or spectracide

I have dollarweeds/moneywarts spreading into my backyard and want to kill them before they spread any more. I'm thinking of using spectracide or atrizine. How long do I need to keep the chickens locked up? I don't like using chemicals in the backyard, but I hate dollarweeds!

    Silkie thread!

Last week I drove and hour and half to get some fertile silkie eggs to hatch in my classroom and it now looks like none of them are fertile. Day six and I can't see a single vein. I am looking for some fertile eggs for my students to hatch. A mix of silkies would be great. If anyone has...

    silkie eggs for classroom

I bought some silkie eggs to hatch in my classroom, but they all appear to be duds. I would like to replace them with some known fertile silkie eggs, assortment welcome. If anyone has some odd ball mix of fertile silkie eggs they are willing to ship to me, I can cover the shipping cost...

    Setting eggs 4-3-14

I tried candling with a different flashlight today and still don't see veins. I saw a tiny dark spot in one yolk, but that is it. I really want to provide my students the opportunity to see some eggs hatch. Assuming these are all duds, does anyone have known fertile silkie eggs they can...

It is a decent led flashlight. I don't see any veins. I really hope these aren't duds.

    Broody Hen Thread!

If a broody hen is left to raise the chicks, is it still possible to handle the chicks daily and get them use to being held? I only have hens for eggs and prefer them to be pets that can be held without stressing them.

    Setting eggs 4-3-14

Question: I just candled some of my classroom silkie eggs (day 5) and I don't see any development. Should I be worried?

    Setting eggs 4-3-14

Tumbleweed, I found some silkie eggs about 1 1/2 hrs from my place. Four are under my broody hen and 13 in my classroom incubator. :)

    Setting eggs 4-3-14

Thanks. I'm kinda disappointed as she was over a week old, but was having trouble walking due to the toe. She was also the only silkie to hatch. I didn't find shell remains or yolk residue in the nest and it is a nest box with five inch sides. Very odd.

    Broody Hen Thread!

All my hens are laying I the nest my broody is in. She is collecting up to 6 eggs a day. Thankfully none are fertile and I manage to pull them every couple of days. She is a sweet girl and even allowed my son to pet her while on the eggs. She is a blue Wyandotte we raised from day 2.
