Most of my roos (all the really mean ones) were euthanized and donated to a wildlife rescue. None were sold to strangers or given away as I did not want them to become cock-fight bait.
I also have a dog I do not trust with my chickens. Very exciting for her. I use TONS of positive reinforcement string overdue training, but add string negatives when in the back yard near the coops. A squirt bottle of water is my best aid. I do not let her stalk them or stare at them, even when...
12 years olds can read and understand signs. I would put up a friendly and plainly written reminding the youngsters to come to the house and ask to feed the chickens.
I'm glad that you welcome the kids enjoying your landscape, and that it hasn't been a problem for you, but this is an...
Sounds like this is a seasonal problem? How often are they taking birds? Do you have an area separate from where your hens free-range where you can turn a "donor" chicken loose? I know this idea is unpalatable, and may actually be a bad idea (like, maybe it's illegal) but it sounds like you...
A chain link dog run works well IF you line it with 1/4" hardware cloth halfway up to prevent raccoons from teaching through and pulling your chickens out, AND if there are no gaps between the tattoo cover and the sides so the raccoons cannot squeeze in.
Advice would be appreciated! And if anyone has something like this I would love to see pictures!
Consider mitigating the dust from the coop side. Cooped chickens creat a LOT of dust bathing, and some dry beddings are worse then others.
Elector PSP is the only fly control spray I know that...
I had exactly the same experience with my two bantam roosters. The dominant one bred the hens, the subordinate one watched for hawks. They free-ranged all day and didn't lose a hen, ever. Hung out with my dog too. Miss those boys, died at 8 and 9 years old. Don't get me wrong, the alpha was...
Hi Kristin,
I've got a Quail Watermaal roo, and three Quail, one Blue Quail hens. Looking forward to hatching as much as possible this year.
Looking forward to networking with other breeders, joining a breed club, and learning how to mitigate the effects I'll have from staying with such a...
Have you had any interested in someone buying your BR toms live? Do they fly, or do you need to keep them in a covered pasture? I hope to get some breeders next spring, but think I need to get the pasture covered first and find a mobile processor.
I'll be curious to hear how you enjoy your...
