    Do roosters go broody?

Today I observed our young (almost 5 mos) rooster hanging in the coop with a broody hen who's been on eggs for a few days. He crowed a few times, and then she left the nest and he seemed to "escort" her to get a drink of water, and some food. She then did a dust bath and mingled with her small...

does eggbound chicken display raspy breathing?

our chicken Daisy died overnight. Yesterday, and we see them everyday, noticed she was isolating, and just standing still. My daughter noticed she was "puffy" and when she picked her up an egg drop out, and then liquid poop with a little white. She had a hard time standing up after that and...

    Integration using wire dog crate

we are working on integrating 2 new 12 week old hens with our 4 existing hens (and one rooster who's only here til we find a home) We have a large dog crate (40 x24?) that they stay in during the day outside on the grass so they can enjoy the fresh air and yard. Should I do anything to cover an...

Is a coop that opens to a run with a roof secure at night so we can leave the door open?

Do we need to lock up 8 week old chicks in coop if it is attached to a secure run? 12' x 8' run with hardware cloth and roof. The only small gaps at the roof line where corrugated panels aren't flush with the wooden frame. Our chicks definitely get that cooped up feeling in the morning before...

    Chicken Run Floor Material

First time BYC farmer, and yes, all the info online is overwhelming. Our coop/run is pretty much done. We have 6 6 week old hens, the coop has sand on the floor, and everytime they come out the sand slides out down the run. Any suggestions on how to edge that? Also, the run is about 12 x 8...

We love our tiny chick, but she's not growing and has an issue or two - almost 3 weeks old.

thank you so much. I feel better now, and maybe we need to just let her be for a while. Maybe she will grow into her "vent" size and it won't protrude : )). Of course, that is not scientifically based so don't take it as fact : )

We love our tiny chick, but she's not growing and has an issue or two - almost 3 weeks old.

Daisy is almost 3 weeks old and about 1/2 the size of her siblings. She has had a prolapsed vent/pasty butt since we brought her home from TS. We are providing daily care for that (washing butt, hydocortisone for a few days, etc.) but she is very tiny and today I've really noticed what I think...

Successful vent prolapse treatment - with photos

Room temp is 66-68 at night, 68-75 during day, heating plate always available. She has been pooping regular poops when we see her do it, but her butt has been a mess and we try to keep it clean. She has never seemed lethargic. We have hydocortisone 1% cream to start today when the second...

Successful vent prolapse treatment - with photos

Trying to deal with this on a 1.5 week old chick. is she able to soak in water at that age if we are holding her? Also, read the hydrocortisone 1% was better to use than Prep H? thoughts? We are struggling with not hurting her. Thanks!

New to chickens, some warming questions of course : ))

They are 6 days old. Thanks for your advice : )) I was wondering about the temperature swing from 60's and brood plate at night, to heat lamp (high 90's) and plate on during the day when we're around.

Our 6 chicks are in the house in a room that gets down to 64 degrees at night and hovers between 64-68 during the day. Is it good to have the heat lamp on during the day while we're around, and then just use the brooding plate at night? thanks!
