Ideal Poultry - Shipping Wednesday *06/27/12* - Anyone Else??

My friend had a broody hen and I had turkeys laying eggs around this time last year so I gave her eggs for her hen to hatch. Three hatched out and survived to maturity. Something killed and ate her female turkey this spring and we harvested her toms on the 4th of July. I think because it is...

Ideal Poultry - Shipping Wednesday *06/27/12* - Anyone Else??

We got our BB Bronze turkeys in the spring, so probably in April and we harvested mid-November so they lived longer then the commercial turkeys. These birds grow so fast, I think the industry standard is 4 1/2 months, so you should have nice sized turkeys by Thanksgiving. I had Ideal throw in...

Anyone else have chicks shipping this week?

Chicks just arrived from Ideal... all are healthy and active, thank goodness! And NO packing peanuts!!! Yea!!! Those golden laced polish chicks are so cute! Now I need to figure out the difference between the black broiler and the black sex link.

lil blue roux - at what age should I harvest my roosters? My understanding on the Freedom Rangers is that it takes about 3 to 3 1/2 months to get them to a good weight. The roosters that we have harvested so far were older then that... at a guess I'd say between 4 to 5 months old. Those guys...

Anyone else have chicks shipping this week?

Yeah, I'm a little worried about "packing peanuts" arriving with my chicks tomorrow from Ideal. I ordered 12 chicks and then called back to add two more. They sent me two e-mails about my chicks shipping out. Just like you awalrooster, I don't want anymore roosters. We have had way too many...

Oops, forgot to hit the quote button... the sweetest comment was in reference to Awalrooster getting barred rock chickies later this month.

ITS EVERYWHERE ... Bedding ideas for toddler and tween chicks

The pellets are the bedding I use when they are in the house in a large cardboard box we call the Chick Palace. Since my birds are free range during the day, I don't bother with bedding out in their coop... just rake it out once in a while from their night time droppings.

ITS EVERYWHERE ... Bedding ideas for toddler and tween chicks

I use something called Multipurpose Pellets made by Eagle Valley. Apparently it is also good for wood burning stoves. As my chicks get older I elevate their water so they can't get the pellets into the water. I think I used a shoe box last time.

I was about to go get bedding for the chicks (multipurpose pellets) when the post office called to say my chicks were in. I thought that they'd be my layer chicks from Ideal in Texas, but they were the Freedom Rangers from JM Hatchery in PA. All 25 are doing great, thank goodness. Hopefully I'll...
