    Introducing issues ...

    1. Did you quarantine them first? New chickens should, ideally, be kept totally apart for about a month, if possible, to make sure there are no disease surprises. 2. After quarantine, put them in a sectioned off area for a week or so, so the chickens can see each other but not touch. 3. After...

    MARYLAND THREAD!

Quote: The water may have warmed up, but I don't think anything can make this heat wave comfortable! Off to the DE State Fair today...husband wants to look at livestock, even though he tells me we can't get any more animals...

Hey from the Eastern Shore of Maryland!

Sorry, Dawn, this thread was so far down my page that I didn't see your post. (and I haven't been on the computer much at all) The Maryland Poultry Swap was, indeed, in June...I missed it because I didn't want to make that 4 1/2 hour drive all by myself both ways. (back problems - would need...

Lots of aggression issues, what should I do?

I ended up getting rid of my guineas this spring, because they were so mean to the other birds. The male was attacking the turkeys, and all of them were attacking the chickens. When my laundry room became an infirmary, I knew it was time to get them gone.

    Gold Laced Wyandotte - transgendered?

Thank you...I guess I have to tell my husband he was right.

    Gold Laced Wyandotte - transgendered?

I have 2 glw from Tractor Supply (straight run), one is definitely a rooster - he's been crowing for a month. I figured him out pretty quickly from his development. My other GLW, I tagged as a pullet. She fit the development profile...until recently. This morning, she tried to crow. She has...

    MARYLAND THREAD!

Kevin, Welcome soon to the Shore! Stephen Decatur is, I believe, supposed to be one of the best schools in the state. (At least, it was when I was researching the area 9 years ago) http://library.municode.com/showDocumentFrame.aspx?clientID=15073&jobId=163709&docID=0 You are allowed up...

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

It was 9. And I just saw her sneaking back into the coop a few minutes ago. I did the sink or swim test and they were all okay. Guess what I had for breakfast this morning?

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

I was wondering when my hen would start laying...figured since it was cold and the days were short, she would wait until spring. I was wrong. By about a week. I found 9 eggs hidden in a back corner of the coop. I didn't think any of the birds were going back there since they're always out front...

What kind of turkey is this?

You might have to construct a temporary holding cell for him in the coop side you want him to go in. Easiest way I've found to get turkeys to go where I want is to herd them up against something then grab em. Herding them is fairly easy, just get 2 long sticks and keep them to either side of...

What kind of turkey is this?

Best guesses, since I am by no means an expert: Probably bronze, maybe a cross. From what I understand, mine are bronze crossed with eastern wild. Maybe 4 or 5 months old. He looks about the same size, or maybe a little bit smaller, than the ones I got in July. (they were already a couple...

    Hurrican Sandy Concerns

I'm hoping mine have the sense to move to the back section of their coop. They're scared to go in there because it is dark, but the front half is just screened...

need to convince grossed out hubby that DLM is the way to go!

Do DLM but tell him you are cleaning it out regularly...say, after he leaves for work or before he gets home? unless you work longer hours than he does - then, I got nothin'.

    Chicken Coop ideas/suggestions

I can picture this with a double-decker nesting box on each side, with an open space and roost in the middle. Maybe a ladder to reach the top boxes. Put the floor of the coop about 1 1/2 feet up from the ground so you have storage underneath. What kind of feeder/waterer are you planning to...
