I have ordered chicks and I'm building a coop and run in the back yard. My great grandmother had a fence around her house about 15 feet out. Her house was off grade/on blocks. She kept the chickens inside that fence. They used the shade of the house to rest/roost in and kept the area around the house completely clean of weeds and other critters - except for poop.
