I am with you - I want peace in the flock or it takes the joy out of it.
For my chickens free ranging means they get out of their run at about 7 am and have 4 acres of yard (and 70 acres of woods) to roam until dusk when they put themselves in for the night to roost ... so I really don't think...
I have five hens: two Wyandottes, an Easter Egger, a Black Australorp, and a Grey Cochin. A couple of months ago the Black Austrlorp started bullying the Grey Cochin. Just in the last few days one of the Wyandottes has joined in the bullying of the Grey Cochin as well. I've used a squirt gun to...
Yep - that's why I'm looking for input from those that have done it :) Many articles mention using gravel of some sort under sand, but nobody says what to put between the two materials.
We're ironing out where we want our long-term chicken run & coop - the hens are in temporary housing now, but will need something more stout before winter.
I'm strongly leaning towards sand for the floor in both. The run will be entirely covered. There is currently 4-5" of pea gravel in the...
I've read that it depends on where you live. Here in MN it gets COLD, so having the flat side of a 2x4 allows the chickens to tuck their feet under their fluffy belly and keep them warm, so they don't get frostbite.
The multi-toned eggs are pretty - lucky you!
The laying feed I'm using does have calcium in it, but because they free range most days I also have oyster shell available to them in a separate dish. Should I be doing something different?
My Easter Egger (Bunny) has consistently been laying a greenish egg nearly every day - until yesterday when she laid a two-tone egg! There is a slight roughness where the color changes. Is this an indication of any sort of issue?
We have the land, just not the know how to construct something
Our chickens are afraid of the coop floor - maybe it's just them - lol! We put a rubber mat on the floor and they'll go inside now. They were also very leary of the steps/ladder and chose to fly up to the door, running...
Our house is more contemporary, even though it is on an old farmstead, so aesthetically it fits in well. No transporter room, but the sick bay is here :p
I have six hens - all around six months old. I think only two of the six are laying so far, so we're not up to our eyebrows in eggs yet.
With the Omlet (yes, they spelled it wrong) Cube I was looking for something easy to construct and use/keep clean and the reviews on it were stellar. For a...
A section just for those who say "uff da" and "ope" ;)! Thanks for the heads up @duluthralphie.
I'm envious of the rhubarb I'm reading that many of you have coming up. I tried growing some a few years ago, but must have planted it in the wrong environment - it barely survived for two years...
