    Yes, this is a great idea. I have seen candlers at TSC, but you can also get them on amazon for $10 or less.

    If other hens lay in there with her, make sure to check for broken eggs as well. They can get pretty nasty!!

    You'll know next time! If she is truly broody, she will go back to the nest no matter what. I have some hens that are so determined to set a nest, that I have to physically pick them up off the nest and offer them water or food. They usually go have some time with the other hens, then come back...

    I see. I doubt she will. I have never had another hen take over. The nesting hen will protect those babies no matter what breed or species they are. I have had two hens set a nest and co-parent when they hatched, though.

    It is hard to try to decide if/when hens will set eggs. Best to let the RIR hen try to hatch them out and hope she sticks around for all of them. In my experience, even when I have put them all under my broody hen at once and marked the eggs and carefully monitored to make sure no new eggs have...
