My daughter went out yesterday evening and found our first egg and it was in one of the nest boxes that we had fake eggs in!! It was a little one but I'm sure they'll be normal once the girls systems get used to making eggs! WOO HOO!!! Finally it begins!!
Ok, noted. Yeah, he didn't invade, it was a full on frontal assault! Hated to git rid of him because my daughter hatched him at school but that behavior is a no-go! I'll definitely explore my options when it comes to roosters.
I may try a couple of different ones.
I appreciate the advice! What age would I consider my pullets "mature"?
I'll definitely ask around for some roosters in need of a re-home whenever the time comes. I like having them around just so long as they understand who runs the place! ;-)
One is a RIR and she's 7 months old. The other 5 are Production Reds and they're 6 months old. All but two have combs that are reddening. No squatting yet. Hurry up and wait! lol
FYI: I'm expanding my run/house and will be getting some Barred Rocks and Speckled Sussex girls to add to the...

Probably closer to 6 months. I didn't even consider the winter/ lack of light issue. Thank you! This is why I'm on this forum and asking questions. I truly appreciate it!
This is one of my first two original chickens from the group that my daughter brought home. It's at least 5 months old maybe even 6. (hatch date was back in the fall) It's bossy over the other pullets but hangs out with the rooster like it's no big deal. NO eggs from anyone yet, NO egg song...
Hey folks, I've got some 6 week old Production Reds that I'd be looking to trade for a couple Barred Rocks or Speckled Sussex. Nothing at all wrong with them. They're happy, healthy and eating up a storm! I just want to diversify the flock!
Any help would be great!
I'd highly recommend against it. I'm new to chickens but went with home made when deciding what route to go. Here are my reasons:
1. You learn A LOT as you explore designs and options
2. It's yours and you can design it to fit the needs of the chickens as well as yours.
3. Long term, it's...
