Covering for chicken pen - any ideas?

our run is 10 by 16 and we have it covered with chicken wire. I have posts set in the ground for the side fencing and ran 2 by 4's across the tops of these posts to support the chicken wire. I also started with the netting and the first really heavy snow we had just tore it all down. We had a...

Cheapest way to insulate a tin roof?

We just put up 1/2" foam board insulation to stop the condensation problem that we had with our tin roof. It worked like a charm and was reasonably inexpensive. I would recommend it.

    catching bugs

I would like to free range but am to concerned about predators snagging one of my girls. I have thought about getting one of the pheromone bag traps that attract the Japanese beetles. I may end up trying that. I thought about growing crickets but they stink and are noisy as well but I may do it...

    catching bugs

We have been having some warm weather here and it has got me thinking about spring. Do any of you use any sort of insect traps or attractants to get free protein for your chickens? I have been toying with the idea of a bug zapper to hang over my run so the girls can have fried bugs in the...

    Sick Hen

Thanks for the replies. The crop seems to be emptying well but I will keep an eye on it. They didn't have Tylan at our local farm store so we are giving them Tetracycline Hydrochloride soluble powder. Do you think that will do the same job? Thanks again for all the help.

    Sick Hen

We have come to the conclusion after consulting with a local that has been raising chickens for a long time that she is not egg bound. We now believe that it is a respiratory infection and are treating with antibiotics. She is still breathing pretty heavy and is still lethargic but has seemed to...

We put a metal roof in our coop and have been having a bad condensation problem. Tomorrow I am going to get some foam insulation board to put in the rafters to stop it.

    Sick Hen

Thanks for the reply. We gave her a warm bath and she really started flexing her vent. I massaged her abdomen and rubbed KY around the vent but nothing happened so we put her to bed for the night. I couldn't feel an egg but her abdomen feels swollen. We will try the bath again in the morning if...

    Sick Hen

We have a 7 month old Production Red hen that about 3 days ago started just standing in one place in the coup. She looks healthy and we have seen her drinking water but today she started breathing heavy and she feels a warmer and slightly bigger than the other girls in the belly. She also has...

Micro Self Sufficiency Project - Cartagena Colombia

When looking through the breed list the Catalana looks to be a great one for your climate. I have never seen them but it sounds like they are very common in South America. They get to a decent weight and could be used as a decent dual purpose bird both for meat and egg laying. Chickens love...

How can I keep my chickens cool?

We have a fan and we freeze 2 liter soda bottles. We just throw a few frozen bottles out when it is starting to get hot and they love to sit on them.
