There's no blood, no sign of where the feathers went, and she's the one who pecks the other three. She's been super broody for the last couple weeks and I have to pull her out of the coop, but she's eating and seems fine. What in the world made her head (skin) white and should I worry?
My silkie hens have been suffering the ravages of red mites for a couple months and I can't seem to get rid of them. The vet gave them three injections (2 weeks apart) of ivermectin. A few days after final injection, one hen had mites again on her vent. I've been cleaning coop (even used...
It looks like dried blood. I've seen the Chicken Poop page, which shows one that includes shed intestinal lining. Says it's perfectly normal. Could that be what's dried on the egg? The hen seems perfectly fine, but I don't want to overlook it if something could be wrong.
Amazingly helpful. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. The little things moving on my hen's vent are tiny and red, so must be red mites. I'll do everything you all suggested and keep them safe and healthy. Thanks again!
We have three silkies who are the sweetest things in the world. We got them because I read them described as "the lap dog of the chicken world." So true. We spend lots of time with them and bring them treats during the day. When we enter the yard they come running. Literally. It's too adorable...
I have 3 of the sweetest little silkie hens, free-roaming during the day and happy as could be. A few months ago, they weren't eating or leaving their coop, so I did some research (on them and the web) and discovered they had mites. I took them to vet who prescribed 3 doses, 2 weeks apart, of...
Thank you so much for the information. Yes, the vet discussed treating the area with me--even suggesting I find a way to keep sparrows away from chickens' area. He thinks that's where the mites came from.
I have purchased poultry dust and DE. They're 1 1/2 - 2 pounds. How often would you...
My 3 little silkie hens had mites under all their fluffy feathers and it took me a while to figure out that was what was going on. The vet gave them a series of 3 Ivermectin injections over 6 weeks to kill any mite eggs that might also be on them. They're great now and are back to eating...
