I have a small flock that is usually in a chicken yard, but I let out in the fenced back yard to free-range. I have a small flock, about 10 hens in general. We are not far out of town, but have hawks and other wild life in the area. I have seen foxes in the area, but never in my yard. All of...
I have had full grown hens taken out by red tailed hawks. One hen was stunned and injured, but recovered. The other three were killed and somewhat eaten, lots of damage to the head.
IMHO, If she disappeared without a trace, I would blame a different predator like a fox or coyote. A full...
I had buffs, but didn't like them as well as my other hens. They wasted feed like crazy, shoveling it out of the feeder even though it was all the same. They also layed pretty small eggs compared to the other hens and were the only ones who feather picked the other hens. I probably will not...
I have fed a Layena (pellets and crumbles) and Layena plus and haven't really noticed a difference in the taste of the eggs. The hens liked them all. I had coupons for the layena plus, so didn't get hit with the price difference as bad. Figured it was worth a try.
I have one hen that did not molt for two years. I had to clip my pullets wings when they were young because they kept getting out of the chicken yard. The others her age molted long ago. She looked terrible with her stubby, ratty feathers for the last year or so. Finally two years later she...
Yeah, it took mine a week or so to start to pick up in laying. Some of my pullets were on the verge of starting and I think 4 of the 6 are now laying. I'm not sure the older ones will lay this winter, they are coming off a hard molt.
I have had shell-less eggs. I provide extra calcium, free-choice, and feed back the egg shells. I think her egg track is just tired. Maybe she will do better after molting and taking a rest.
I had a few small eggs like that and when I cracked them, they had yolk fragments instead of a whole yoke. Maybe there was some yolk left over after your previous egg weirdness and that resulted in a mini egg?
Interesting thread. I have not dispatched any chickens yet, but I'm thinking the hatchet is the way to go. I definitely understand the benefits of keeping it calm for the animal in question. Just a blink and it's over in their conscious mind. I am planning on meat birds in the spring and...
