    Antique Incubator

I actually picked up a number 5 at an Amish auction this weekend. I would love to restore it. Mine is in very similar shape to the original poster's, except it's missing the platform below the water container.

    Lavender Orpington project ....

Here are my first Lavender Orpingtons I've hatched. I got them off rockin paints. Looks like I got lucky and got a cockerel and a pullet. I think they look like they have great potential. What do you think? I have 3 more in the brooder from eBay eggs. I have some Buffs that are almost laying age...

Chirping in the egg...UPDATE! Turken didn't make it

I totally agree with the previous post from Nikkumz. I don't buy into the never help thing. On my last hatch, one of the chicks was definitely stuck. If I hadn't helped it out after external pipping, it would have died and it would have been due to humidity issues, not the health of the chick. I...

    Naive about chicken swaps

I agree about the chicken auctions. I'm in Central Ohio and the one that I go to is run by the Amish. The poultry auction isn't until 1PM and most birds get there in the morning. They never have water and are panting and crowded. I know you're not supposed to buy an animal out of pity, but...

What is wrong with my muscovy?

Mine did exactly the same thing on their back. I was convinced they had some terrible skin disease and then their feathers came in.

Need help selecting sheep or goat breed

I am in almost the exact same situation. We're in Central Ohio as well and bought a 6.5 acre farm at the beginning of May. We are definitely going to do dairy goats. I wouldn't mind having just a few sheep too. I'd love to try miniature cattle, but they're a lot more expensive to start up. I...

Can anyone tell me what breed these girls are?

I have one of the grey ones that I got from the mixed bantam cage at TSC. She is the sweetest of my chickens just like you. I named her Chipmunk because she had the chipmunk brown stripes when she was a little chick. She actually likes to get held and due to her super sweet disposition (and...

    Rooster age for fertile eggs

I have a white Leghorn rooster that is almost exactly the same age as yours. He was doing the deed with my year old Wheaten Marans. I put the egg in the incubator with some mail order eggs. Here is the result. He even has the feathered legs, which his mother does not.

    LG. witha wafer thermostat ?

I have one. I got it off eBay. I'm not sure they call it a Little Giant, but I believe it's the same company, GQF. The model number on mine is 2362N. Hope that helps.

July 14th - NEWBIE Set 11 eggs at 2PM CST. Anyone wanna join me?

Quote: Okay, so how do you help a baby out? After 36 hours since the first pip my pekins are struggling to zip and the farmer that I got the eggs from recommended I help them out....but I'm nervous! BYC has scared the living daylights out of me about taking the lid off the incubator and them...

July 14th - NEWBIE Set 11 eggs at 2PM CST. Anyone wanna join me?

I ended up with 4 chicks, unless there are some real stragglers. I helped one that was taking a long time. That egg was actually from my chickens. I'm very excited. It's our first farm baby.

July 14th - NEWBIE Set 11 eggs at 2PM CST. Anyone wanna join me?

I just got a call from home that there's one little fluffy chick in the incubator and at least one more egg pipping! I can't wait to get home. Don't lose hope, Contessa.

July 14th - NEWBIE Set 11 eggs at 2PM CST. Anyone wanna join me?

I wouldn't, but that may just be me. I have very limited experience, but I've only heard of assisting after pipping. I have looked at eggs on day 22. I know how hard it is to be patient.

Nothing yet. My last two hatches have all started on day 19. I think these chicks like messing with our heads ;-)
