My 6 year old hen, she is a Red Star, had impacted crop. We think we got that fixed as the hard lump was gone, she was doing better, then her crop got squishy. She started getting lethargic and stopped eating. We noticed her crop enlarged in the morning and feeling like a water balloon, so we...
What about in chickens that had previously been good layers with nice strong normal shells? The chicken in question is almost 2 and started laying thin shelled eggs, then soft shelled and now there is evidence of no shell, unless she ate the membranes. Last week I gave her cheese and her egg...
I know this is an old thread but I'm wondering the same. I've fed TX naturals from the beginning first with starter and now layer and I'm now having this issue.
Did you have any luck giving her the calcium tablet? I tried this morning after another soft shelled egg and had no luck. I tried it in cheese and then scrambled eggs. I may have my sone help me and see if we can open her beak and put it in later.
Update: Yesterday I go a perfectly shaped egg that had only a little sandpaper feel on the bottom and the top, the sides were relatively smooth and the egg was a lot thicker than they have been. I've also decided that the missing feathers are a totally separate issue. I caught her picking...
What is the best way to give the calcium citrate? Crushed up in something like scrambled eggs or cheese? Also is there a certain time of day I should give it to her? Should it be giving in the morning for better absorption?
Well I got another soft shelled egg today. So now I'm again questioning what is wrong. I thought the added calcium fixed it. I guess at least it's not a shell-less egg. I do think I'm going to try and change feeds. Though I'm not sure that will do anything because they've been on Texas...
Are you still feeding the Texas Naturals? I've actually been looking at changing to New Country Organics red house blend 8 layer pellets. As it has more calcium and is also offered by the feed store near me.
Yesterday I fed my hen cheese and today I got a shelled egg. Still thin and a little sand papery, but the shape was slightly better. Not perfect but better, so I'm really leaning toward this being a calcium issue. Hoping for better tomorrow. Today I added in egg shells and oyster shells in...
Thanks. I am trying that and also dried egg shells. I don't know if my hen eats the oysters, but I have seen her pick out egg shells that I've used in the garden.
