So from what I understand, hatching is mostly an instinctual process running off of movement, and the muscle in the neck that will swell and flex to facilitate zipping. I dont think there is anything conscious going on with it.
The rest of those questions.. I dont really know!
Hello everyone! Pre-post warning: this will contain several photos of a duckling with a hole in the skull that will be upsetting to some. You have been warned.
My hatches this year have been. Odd to say the least. With Chernobyl the three legged baby (who is still doing great, will post an...
Hello everybody! Hope you are all doing well. If you arent, I hope it gets better and maybe this little mystery baby case will cheer you up a bit.
I give some of my duck eggs to schools in the area to hatch every spring for their classrooms. Last Friday, one of the teachers messaged me.
"Sooo we...
I was reading through some threads and have one more question: how do I know if they are broad breasted or not? Or do I just have to find that out later?
So this is my first time hatching turkeys. To be honest I didnt think it would work. The eggs my friend gave me were for eating but she thought they were pretty so we stuck them in the incubator to see what would happen. Now I have 5 turkeys and some questions!
They hatched 4 days early. They...
Her first year she was indentical to the other duck! This started as a few white feathers after her first molt, but has increased with every molt since.
She's turning white faster than any other duck, but still seems to be perfectly healthy.
Hi everyone!
I have this duck that I am in love with, and have no idea what is going on with her coloring!
This is her tonight. She is a lighter tan, not really a buff, more of a dusty brown, but her feathers are turning white. It started as a few on her back, and now she is more than half...
Well, I'm glad I left it! Just hatched out with some minor assistance (malpositioned legs) but seems healthy and fully formed! Not sure what happened with candling but maybe it was a weird angle?
Well, quick update: we have externally pipped on time with everyone else! Not sure what's going to become of it but I will let you know in the morning!
I am 100% sure its the embryo moving. Even when the egg has been sitting still, it will kick and wriggle same as the others!
I have a feeling you are right with the low chance of hatching though. Probably isnt a good sign. All of the others seem to be developing normally!
Hi everyone!! Hope you are all having a great 2025. I have a question about a duck egg!
I put these eggs in on March 2. One of the eggs, #11, is developing wayyy slower than the others but is still kicking and squirming and lively as ever. Wanted to see what your thoughts were?
As compared...
I realized I forgot to update this: Daisy did great after surgery and is back to his usual bossy self! It was expensive but absolutely worth every penny.
My advice is contact a vet. If you cant get it in on your own, waiting can make it worse. I should have brought Daisy in after it first...
I got them from my neighbour. They were supposed to be duck eggs!
I was told that the rooster was an Orpington and the hens were Western Rustic, but I dont think that was correct. Theres no way those two breeds made these guys.
