I've tried putting sand in their smaller run, but they just cover it with straw. I use straw in their smaller "safe" run (3.5' x 10') and in their coop. The coop is very dry and I clean it every other week or so. The run I clean less frequently, adding straw regularly. But I gave both the coop...
This is our first year with chickens. We have four hens of 4 different breeds. They're all doing great, our Salmon Faverolle and Easter Egger are laying. They have a comfy, protected but ventilated coop and a safe run (hardware cloth buried around 3.5' x 10' perimeter) on the ground that has a...
That's true, the roosts don't have protection on the side by our house. Maybe a piece of plywood that protects the top half of the coop, including the roosts, that could be added in winter and removed in summer would be a good addition. And thank you for the reminder about water/drainage and...
This is our first year with chickens here in the Pacific Northwest. We have four hens (I think they're all hens) that are about 5 months old--no eggs yet. We built a coop and run based on lots of information about ventilation for the summer and protection in the winter. Winters are pretty mild...
Thanks for asking! Actually, it's just a few weeks since I made this worried post. No, I am not feeding them medicated feed. Thankfully, we have a great feed store close by and they've given me great advice as far as feed, etc. I think (?) what I was seeing was just her different style, or maybe...
Thank you--I was worrying too much. I've decide that she's just a little different from the others, maybe younger or slower to mature? She didn't get up on the roost as early as the others. She also is quicker to accept treats from me. She's doing just great, though, has lots of beautiful...
I am raising chicks for the first time. My four chicks are 11 days old--a Salmon Faverolle, a Wyandotte, a Wellsummer, and an Easter Egger. They're in a cardboard brooder in the house with a heating pad warmer, a well-stocked chick feeder with chick feed from the nearby friendly feed store, a...
Okay, what you say makes sense--the only time their behavior seemed really worrisome was when I had the space heater on and it got very warm in their room. Thank you!!
Thank you! Yes, they are very busy running around, cheeping, looking in the mirror, eating, drinking, then suddenly they all head for the heating pad area and cuddle up together and are quiet.... They are very fun to watch. We had ducks years ago, but chicks are different! Thanks again for the...
I've been wondering about this, too. We have a close neighbor with chickens, but they already trade pet-sitting with another neighbor who watches their chickens and dog. Does anyone know of a website where people trade pet-sitting? Doesn't that seem like something that's needed?
Here are photos from above and from the side looking into the heating pad warmer. Any thioughts? The heat thing is tricky--it's hard to know if they're happy and healthy and warm enough/not too warm when you've never had chicks before!
