I have a chicken sitting on chicken and turkey eggs. The turkeys will go to a friend in a week or so, but as of right now they are all in the regular coop. Nest is almost ground level and other hens are able to walk right next to them.
First time hatching chickens and turkeys, momma hen is currently sitting on 8 eggs total. She's in the coop nesting box, and my other hens are laying in the other box. Eggs are due to hatch Tuesday, should I leave her and chicks in the coop of be prepared to move them to a different location?
First time broody hen mama here and I've got some questions! She's been broody about a week now and I couldn't get her to shake it off, I contacted a friend to see if she'd take some chicks once hatched and she had some turkey eggs she needed to hatch, so we placed them under my hen after 4 days...
One of my laying hens has been giving us poop cover eggs! Like somewhat runny poop speckled all over the eggs. Ive been leaving the eggs unwashed, but am not sure what to do with these eggs! Should I be rinsing them? Brushing off the poop? I don't know! Nesting boxes are clean, I'm doing deep...
So if the layer feed does contain oyster shells, what should I feed them after they do start laying?
I did pick up 20% to add to the feeder so it ups protein some. I've been using the DuMor brand and staying with crumbles.
update::
I found this beauty this afternoon while cleaning!! I'm guessing it's from my rescued bantam though as she was laying in the dog crate she was living in before she came to live with us!
I do have a bag of oyster shells but was told not to give it to them until after they were laying, and then the ones that needed it would eat it. I think I'll go grab a bag of 20% and switch back for a bit
I was told to switch to laying crumble when they were 18 or so weeks old :/
It's my first time having chickens, should I switch back to 20%?? I've got about a half bag of laying left!
They've been on layer crumble for close to two months now. Protein is 16%. I do try to not over feed snacks, if it's grains not more than 2 handfuls spread out for the 10 of them. Same with fruits/veggies handful of berries at a time (probably like 6/8 total cut up) mostly because the cost is...
I have 9 hens that are now 25/26 weeks old. Variety of breeds, barred rocks, buff orpingtons, speckled Sussex.. a couple have had bright red Combs for about 6/8 weeks now. They are eating laying crumble and are offered a variety of free ranging and fruit/veggie snacks each day. Not one egg yet...
Yes, I'm not sure what happened there, but she was definitely not in good shape...wound is healed now, although her growth seems to be stunted. They seem to be leaving her alone now though. I guess I'll just have to closely monitor them to see what's really going on.
Does anyone use a wifi...
