They look like a cross to me. Most hatcheries that sell "ameracaunas" are actually EE's. I got 12 Ameracaunas from a breeder. They are black with the Roos having an faint dark green tint when in direct sunlight. Ameracaunas will have muffs, slate gray/black legs and lay a blue egg. Your...
I have two broody silkies and they will steal another hen's egg is she lays it close enough and leaves. They nest on the floor of their coop (silkie shack). They are horrible protective and will rarely leave the nest. I've watched one hen get up to go eat and another will replace her on the...
Grit is good. They can have a variety of fruits and veggies. There's a list on here of what's good and bad for them. Mine love strawberries and baby spinach.
Oh let's see, various types of Wyandottes, leghorns, comets, Easter eggers, hamburg, ameracaunas, an Aracauna roo, blue andalusians and black australorpes. A few are suppose to be buff orpingtons, but I'm thinking the are something else and some white rocks and a lone barred rock hen. I almost...
I doubt they'll eat the shavings. You could put their feed in a shallow dish till ya get a feeder. They also like to free range. We had a portable pen for ours till their house was built and fenced. Laying crumbles is a milled feed. Suitable for adult chickens, hens or Roos.
I feed my adults regular laying crumbles. I have 6 hens and a roo and they have hatched out about 23 chicks. They don't roost, typically. Mine sleep in a pile on the floor of their coop, in a pile with the roo on top. I use straw, but I'm sure shavings is fine.
Some publications are pro commercial feed and some are pro free range. It all depends on the opinion of the author. If natural is what you're going for, then free range would be the ticket. You could also keep non GMO feed out for them with oyster shells when they get to laying age.
Some of mine will peck me till I pick them up. These are the ones I've raised from chicks. The others that I got after they were a few months old to a year old, just follow me when I have feed or treats for them.
My silkie hens have hatched out 18 chicks so far. I keep chick starter/grower in a separate feeder, but the chicks are following the hen's lead and free ranging in their fenced area. They all seem to be growing properly. My meat chicks get fed twice a day now and are big enough to get out in...
I'm waiting on my silver laced wyandottes, black ameracaunas, white rocks, comets and columbian wyandottes to start laying. The Roos are all crowing, but no mating behavior yet. I couple leghorn pullers have started laying. I find a smaller sized egg here and there out where they free range...
