Yeah we put up plastic around the run to help a bit too and tons of straw bedding to give them something to nest down in. We also put bales around the outside in some areas for some extra insulation. I think I’m probably just crazy and *I’m* the one who needs to acclimate, not them 🤣
Hi neighbor, we’re in Carver! That’s a great post- thanks for sharing!! I LOVE that cute little snowman you put on your run ❤️ Which I know is totally not the point, but it’s adorable :)
I know I REALLY want them to be nice to each other!! we had a few unseasonably warm days late last month and I let everyone free range together and they seemed to do well. I was thinking about putting the littles out during the day in a dog crate so they can all see each other and spend some...
We have 4 girls about 8 months old. Are you thinking more chickens to increase the heat? Well guess what?? We actually also have 4 more who are 8 weeks old that I still have in the house because I’m not sure how to acclimate them to the cold- and by them I mean I’m too worried because it’s cold...
Ok.
I’m sure folks who have had chicks for a long time are tired of answering this question.... BUT
This is our first winter with chickens - my husband spent all spring and summer building them a coop that is insulated, draft free and well ventilated. I put a thermometer in there because it’s...
Thanks I will (yes he seems SUPER knowledgeable!!!)!! I just heard a report that as of right now they’re predicting a mild winter here in Massachusetts. Who knows if they’re right, and I know I’ll be mad in the summer when the bugs are out of control... but I have to admit I wouldn’t mind if our...
She’s very mellow compared to her sister- she really doesn’t splash much unless she’s swimming. I’m afraid to bring her in and have her get stressed because she’s already small, I don’t think she can afford to get much smaller. I’m going to try and bring her in occasionally for swimming and then...
We did check for heavy metal tox- no lead or zinc. And nothing shiny on her rads. Her bloods were remarkably unremarkable! It’s been progressing over the last few months- legs look and feel normal. And if I put my hand under her feet she feels strong when she pushes against me. I wonder if it’s...
Thank you for that thorough reply!!! If I bring her inside for a swim in the tub, give her a blow dry and bring her back outside, would that be an issue in the winter? Like coming inside where it’s warm for 20-30 minutes then going out in the cold? Maybe do that 3x a week and then give her a...
I have a very special duck who has lots of mobility problems. We’ve been to the vet for blood work and x rays with no explanation. We’ve decided as long as she’s able to swim, eat and get around (which she can just very, very slowly) that we’ll keep and eye on her and make sure she’s happy and...
I hope so! I’m worried I’ve been feeding them too many veg etc and that she has a nutritional deficiency from not eating enough of her crumbles. Thanks for the encouragement!!
I have them on a chicken grower (we also have chickens) that I add niacin to. Is there a brand you recommend? Here is a picture of her from earlier today (she’s the one in front)
