HELP! Broody Hen - one nesting box!

My Chantecler layer has gone broody and I have only one nesting box for my three laying hens. How do I snap her out of it? It has been a week and we never see her! My kids love it because they can pet her while she stares into space but my other hens have decreased production and started laying...

Loving the sand in my run but ANOTHER concern.....

Hmmm thanks! I have no problem changing the sand out once a year because I have a fairly small run. It stays dry - the hens don't make much of a mess of it. A few dust bath holes here and there! Thanks for the input! I think I will take the advice and get a smaller mesh scoop!

New to chickens with 3 hens. What do I need to be offering in terms of vitimens/supplements?

My laying hens have been with me for 10 days. I offer them organic layer feed and free choice oyster shell. I refresh water daily. They also get "treats" daily (vegetables/fruits/meats/greens from the garden). I have heard a lot on this site about apple cider vinegar, omega-3s and...

Loving the sand in my run but ANOTHER concern.....

I am loving the sand in my chicken run. It is so easy to clean and maintain and it looks great. But it is almost TOO easy! Every morning when I rake up the poop to scoop out with a litter scoop it literally disappears! I am just concerned that over time the sand will still look good but will be...

What treat did your chickies get today?

Mango, radish tops, cilantro and spinach from the garden, soft cherries and a big arm load of weeds to scratch around in! The cherries were the top pick : )

Sand in my coop and run! Love it but some questions!

Thank you for the advice! I just have to say how amazing the sand is in the coop and run!! I am just in love with it. It is so clean and dry and easy to maintain. And my hens LOVE it! They are so much happier. It was funny that at first they did not want to step on it. Then a few minutes later...

Sand in my coop and run! Love it but some questions!

I recently put sand in both my coop and run. I absolutely love it in the coop. I only have three hens so it is small and it takes 2 minutes to scoop out the poop with a kitty litter scoop. In the run it is great as well - I rake up the poop and then use the scoop to shake off the excess sand, it...

Egg laying during the day? Establishing pecking order?

So fascinating! I did not know any of that! Thank you for the info and advice! It is such a learning process - I literally learn something new every day! Should I move the roosts back from the door so that they have to move farther in? I just want them all to be comfortable - not just Daisy : )

Egg laying during the day? Establishing pecking order?

A few concerns about my new little flock... It seems that at least one and maybe two of my chickens are laying right now and they mostly do so mid-morning. I thought they mostly laid eggs at night but maybe I just assumed! Also one of the hens is very dominant - she seems cranky and will...

New to chickens - family members with flu like symptoms - in need of some opinions!

Thank you everyone! I am in Alberta, Canada! The more I have pondered this, I have come to the conclusion it is food poisoning from a restaurant where my daughter and husband shared a meal. That is why they are sick and my son and myself are not! Yay! Glad my girls are not to blame! I have put a...

New to chickens - family members with flu like symptoms - in need of some opinions!

Do chickens exhibit symptoms of salmonella? Or are they just carriers? Should I be talking to the lady who I got the hens from to see if there has been any history of salmonella on her farm?

New to chickens - family members with flu like symptoms - in need of some opinions!

We brought our three hens home two days ago and set them up in a new coop/run. My whole family has been in and out of the coop feeding and handling the hens. This morning my daughter and my husband are sick with flu like symptoms. I did make sure to wash both of my kids hands after being in and...

New to Chickens! Questions about my new hens!

Hello all! Two nights ago I brought our hens home - one white chantecler, one partridge chantecler and a gold laced wyandotte. This morning I found three eggs in the coop already! BUT - they were not in the nesting box but were laying underneath the roosts AND one had a very soft shell. Here are...
