So my quail flock has Marek's...

Following for more info. My chicken flock has mareks (confirmed necrop) I contacted my state vet before purchasing quail and she told me that Mareks is only transferred from chickens to chickens. I specifically asked about quail and turkeys and was told I would be fine. Is the information I've...

Unfortunately no. Maybe someday but right now I'm just breeding birds for pleasure.

The Moonshiner's Leghorn Thread Peanut Gallery

Edit: Moved from the other page, I meant to post here originally. I finally found some buff leghorns! :yesss: I went to a breeder to pick up some other breeds and happened to see them in the pen. I was completely amazed at the quality! Unfortunately he only had 2 chicks available (of course I...

Is this really a chocolate poult?

Thank you! I will enjoy them no matter what color they are. Kinda bummed that they are not what I was sold though :th

Is this really a chocolate poult?

Thanks, at what age should I be able to tell the color for sure?

Is this really a chocolate poult?

I was thinking the same but they have a mask. I don't have any from then. After doing some more research they may be rusty blacks, though I'm still not sure. I found this on Porter's.

Is this really a chocolate poult?

I just got my first group of heritage turkeys, 7 chocolate and 1 blue slate. All 7 chocolates had milk choc colored down when I got them. At 1.5 weeks I am noticing that only 2 of the chocolates are the regular color of pictures I've been seeing, and 5 are changing to another color. What color...

    Chocolate Olive Eggers

You could breed the pullet back to the original chocolate male. This would result in 100% chocolate chicks. It is a very common practice in poultry called line breeding.

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Wow, that's the best answer I could hope for, being I had plans to keep the brown mottled anyways! I think I am beginning to fall down the leghorn color collection rabbit hole... :D :D

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Thanks, I'm glad to know its not a 10 year plan! Its starting to seem like an obtainable goal. The only problem I see is Luck, I don't seem to have much of that :P The next issue I'm facing is my Isabellas are also mottled and I would like to keep that going as well. Of the 25% lavs produced...

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Sounds like a good plan, simple enough. I will be breeding by it for sure! How many gens should one expect before you start getting past fray and wingpatch issues? Does that depend on the quality of the original stock?

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

What breeding approach would result in the least amount of cringing? Lol I'm beginning my trip down this road and would really appreciate your opinion.

    The Moonshiner's Leghorns

Man, that's some goals! I would love to have a brooder shed that big! Right now I only have a 3x6 and a 5x8 under one shed. Have a couple more to add before spring.
