For those cold winter days and nights we previously used an electric oil filled radiator. It really spins our meter so I have been looking for a new method. I just installed a Diesel Heater today. I think it’s going to provide the heat we need and it will not break the bank. Uses 1/2 liter per...
I installed technically backwards because I had a poop door originally and my opening was already framed out in metal. I installed it into a 1/2" piece of OSB then screwed that on the inside. I purchased the external photo sensor. I have had it a week now and it works great.
We just purchased and installed the Ador and love it. Did a lot of research and finally decided on the Ador due to many factors but mostly the rugged design and the great engineering. Of all the automatic door solutions available I felt that the Ador was just a better mousetrap if you will. I...
Great ideas. Our coop is new this spring so I have not run the permanent wiring yet. I am using an extension cord right now but plan to trench in the wiring at some point. Going to install the Ador soon it looks to be the most robust of the door systems that I have looked at. The camera idea...
Our primary predators are raccoon. We have a few foxes and coyotes and we occasionally see hawks flying by. We started our coop this spring and so we are novices but we are having a good time with it. We have a very good friend that has been raising chickens for years and he has been a great...
We free range at times but have not had any hawk issues so far. The sun shade covers 90% of the run. There are 4 areas with about 12-18" of open space. If a hawk got in there I don't think it could fly out. As for the hardware cloth around the parameter of the run, we designed so the panels can...
Great idea using the furnace filters. Next on my list. The Echo is working out great. Finding all kinds of uses. We have lots of our lighting connected and the shopping lists are handy. It's really spooky how well it works.
New Member but we have been lurking for some time now. Just about have our coop finished. Just a few small tweaks left. We have 12 hens and a rooster. 4 nesting boxes, horizontal waterer, and a hanging bucket feeder (thank you BYC for the ideas). We have a pelletized limestone floor. All...
I am a self professed gadget guy. Recently got an Echo for my birthday so I am always looking for new ways to use it. I have a Hue hub and an Insteon hub so the Echo interfaces with both of those to allow control of our hue bulbs and insteon devices. Works great.
So I see many great ideas for Coop design. How about Coop automation? What are you doing to bring Chicken Coops into the world of Hi-Tech and automation?
As for myself, I am currently adding my Coop to the world of the Amazon Echo and Insteon. I just added our Chicken Coop fans to our...
