    I have used the reusable traps and I either dump them in the pond for the frogs or put them in the compost pile for the chickens to rummage through. I also have swallows that nest in my bluebird houses in the pasture that help keep the numbers down.

    Sorry for your loss. I have lost birds to hawks and snapping turtles. It is never easy. I agree with @ChunkyBirb, figuring out what it was that attacked makes it easier to deter it from happening again.
