So, yesterday we tried the warm water soak with no results, and i did not feel an egg in her system . . This morning she is getting around but walking is hard for her. She ate well out of my hand and drank a lot of water. . but she seems to be straining to poop or lay. Her belly is distended...
I have a production red hen about 3 years old. For the last 3 days she has been waddling instead of walking, she is still moving around but slower than normal. She is eating and drinking about half her usual amount. Its been really hot here and I figured she was egg-bound. So, today we...
it is different but I read an article about it and they mentioned that she could be stressed or crowded in the coop. We added two new ladies to the flock (now at 7) a month or so ago, which could explain it. . . so, how does one 'de-stress' a hen. . . my girls are totally spoiled, they free...
My 3 year old RIR has laid a couple of eggs that have cracks just under the shell, the shell itself seems solid and smooth. It just has these weird cracks all going the same direction. They almost look like the egg got to big to quickly while still in her body.
anyway, does anyone know what...
I am curious about using heat in the coop when the hens are molting. Is it necessary? I live in the mountains in Western North Carolina. It is pretty consistently below freezing at night for December and January. I have a small coop and 6 hens that are from 16 weeks to 2 years old. My two...
Seminolewind, Thank you for acknowledging my loss. . I am very attached to my hens and this was a surprising turn of events for me. I've not had any health issues with by birds prior to this. . . I will be more observant from now on. .
I am sorry to say she died overnight. I am just stunned and not sure at all what happened. It was just so fast. . . she was getting around and eating watermelon early yesterday and drinking water. Late afternoon, her crop was really big, and her comb was obviously dry (dehydrated). . . we...
Thanks for the information. I did not notice any bad smell from the fluid. I also forgot to mention above that she isn't pooping. I have never heard of sour crop but will Google it. Do you know of anything else I could do to help her? She is pretty young . . .
Thanks for getting back to...
So, we spent some time with her this evening. I noticed her comb was thin and sort of curled over. . . it just didn't look right. She was/is very weak and lethargic. However, her crop was still really big . . . I think she might be dehydrated even though she was still drinking water...
Thanks for getting back to me!
I haven't seen her poop, but will look and see. . . I haven't noticed her crop being so large but I'll check it out in the morning. I did massage it a little bit earlier. I didn't notice any type of lump, dense or hard area but I will keep massaging it.
I...
Afternoon
One of my RIR's (4.5 months old) has been doing great. She just started laying a few days ago a few small but perfect eggs. Yesterday and today I think it was her, anyway, laid eggs with rubbery shells. Now her crop is huge and she is sort of lethargic. She is usually not...
Good reminder! The chicken yard is fairly protected but I know predators can be sneaky. I will put her in the regular coop at night. . . and luckily I will be working from home most of the next couple of days. So I can monitor the situation.
I have set up the brooder (rabbit hutch) in the chicken yard to keep her comfortable and near her pals. Aspirin in water and lots of TLC. She is my favorite hen and best layer in the yard.
