    We have 28 hens (Ameraucana, Leghorn, Plymoth Rock, and New Hampshires). After giving some to family and friends, we donate our surplus to the local food bank so those who cannot afford fresh eggs can get some good quality protein. Teaches our kids the importance of helping others and charity too.

    Help identifying chicken killer

    Its coyotes. We live in NC too and the exact same thing happened to us two years ago. My husband "bear proofed" the coop by putting up heavy gauge hardware cloth instead of chicken wire after we had them chew through the chicken wire. Have seen and heard the coyotes and they are getting more...

    Which rooster, Barred Rock or Rhode Island Red?

    Definitely go with the Barred Rock. We have had Barred Rocks that are very sweet. Either that or I would recommend a Chochin. We currently have a Cochin Rooster and he is HUGE, but so lovey, calm, and nice to the "girls". Only gives me the stank eye every now and then but has never chased...
