The fun for me was interacting with the chickens. They would be right in there when I was fixing the lawn mower or working in the garden. Kids loved feeding and playing with them. Don't want chickens if they can't wander the yard. I think I am done.
Thanks. I did develop a new appreciation for chickens and it was a positive experience even though we are sad now. It is hard to free range chickens. The poor creatures have too many enemies.
I think we are done having chickens. Today the neighbors invisible fence malfunctioned and their dogs attacked my remaining two chickens. One is severely wounded, she is resting in the coop, but probably won't make it through the night and the other was scared off and I doubt she will be back...
Good news. I went out to check on my chicken and the other one was standing by the coop. I don't know what scared her off yesterday, but luckily she found her way home. My wife will be thrilled when she gets home.
The Eagles did not bother my roosters for a year and ignored the hens since I got them. They perch in an oak tree on the shoreline right above the coop. The eagles main food is fish from the lake. More than likely it was the hawk I saw yesterday, a cat, dog or fox. I will cut their time free...
They have plenty of places to hide.... under the deck, stairs, boat, picnic table, bushes, and they were using them, especially after the fox attack. The problem was they started getting bolder and bolder and would eat grass out in the open yard. I have a feeling she did not know what hit her...
No, I am not going to have Chickens if they are locked up 24/7. The coop is secure. They may have had a short time here, but it was the best time of their lives. They couldn't contain themselves when I went to let them out in the morning. It was so funny. I did not think chickens were emotional...
Three is the most we can have. If one becomes available we will get another. Otherwise I will spend more time with it and not let it out for such a long period of time.
No, if they can't run free during the day, I'm not going to have them. Kids play with them and they follow me around when I'm doing yard work. Keeping me company. They were really friendly. I had two roosters for a year a while back and gave them to a friend that owned a farm, because they were...
Yes, they are pretty helpless and they put their trust in us to protect them. I feel like I let them down, but I really can't watch them all the time and they love their freedom to roam. If Lola survives the winter we might get two more in the spring. We will see how it goes. They are so lovable.
Back in September my wife got three chickens from a friend to butcher. They were so lovable I talked her in to keeping them. We bought a small coop on Amazon, some feed and prepared an area for them. I would let them out in the morning and they would forage in our big yard all day. At night they...
I put similar roosts in mine(not as high) but they seem to prefer to sleep on the straw on the bottom. A friend of mine told me they need roosts when I first got them. I built 6 roosts of different styles and heights but they don't use them. They are busy all day working my yard and at dusk they...
One of them sleeps there and the other two right next to her. I pick the poop out every day. Only one is laying eggs and she lays 1 every other day at 2pm like clockwork. She is the one that sleeps in the back room.
It's the size of the elevated small compartment at the back of the coop where they sleep and lay eggs. The coop is about 3' by 6' I covered much of the lower area with 1/4 inch plywood to keep raccoons out. Left plenty of area open for ventalation.
