Salt is not a good mama…😡

I’m glad Sky is doing better! I now add a vitamin booster - poultry cell is my choice - to the water of all my chicks from the second they start to drink. Just a few drops to the chick waterer. I keep that up for several weeks. I no longer lose hatched chicks. 🐣

Meal Worms or Black Soldier Fly Larvae?

Yes you’re right also, to an extent. Those atoms or nutrients have variations or types and some are bio available and some are not. Some help and some don’t. It’s like saying all natural is the way to go. Hemlock is all natural and break down into atoms. Cancer is made up of atoms. Don’t want...

Meal Worms or Black Soldier Fly Larvae?

I can understand that! I’ve never dealt with crickets so don’t know how I’d feel about them. I do have compactor though. There’s a species called African NightCrawlers. They get to be 24” or more in length. Totally creeps me out! I don’t care how great they are at eating carbon and giving loads...

Meal Worms or Black Soldier Fly Larvae?

First off I agree with the what they eat is what I end up eating too so try to stay with the natural foods like veggie, bugs, etc. I’m not a purist though. I do the best I reasonable can. Ok the insect control part of grass works like this: when you add grass to the plant soil (I use a thin...

Meal Worms or Black Soldier Fly Larvae?

I googled 😆. As a follow up, another study found that mealworms fed primarily/only styrofoam weren’t getting full nutrition and started eating each other. Honestly I get some of that in my mealie bins too. I admit I’m not always on top of their care as much as I should be. I’m still looking for...

Meal Worms or Black Soldier Fly Larvae?

Really? I’d love to see the studies on that. If the mealworms are metabolically changing the styrofoam into organic compounds that are bio available for animals that eat them that would be fantastic! I too use the frass for my plants. Not only as a fertilizer but also as an insect control. Works...

Meal Worms or Black Soldier Fly Larvae?

I mainly raise the mealworms for my chickens. 3 bins work best to keep the growth stages separate as they will eat each other to a certain degree. I have played with raising BSF and have had some success but haven’t got it down completely yet. The insects coming from china are fed sewage and...

Harris Farms Nurture Right 360 Incubator is AMAZING!

I couldn’t keep the humidity at all stable with wet hatches. I eventually gave up and started dry hatching and that’s worked better. As for modifications I did see a video where the woman ran a cotton wick all thought the water channels and then place the end of the wick into a jug of...

Moving 30 live chickens cross state lines

I moved my flock 7 hours away twice - first to my daughter’s house and then 3 months later back home to mine. It was hens and one with several young chicks, also a few old girls. I didn’t have a roo at the time but don’t think that would have made a difference. I fully expected to lose a few...

Is there a way that you can incubate eggs with out getting roosters

Where does the ‘chicken’ in dog and cat food come from? Male chicks from the hatchery as well as slaughter houses /poultry processing plants. It’s a fact. I’ve done both - culled day old cockerels (definitely not fun) and given them away to any taker. I much prefer the giving them away route...

Red Raised Area on Rooster’s Butt Below Vent

Tua Thank you for your thoughts. I never see the hens picking at him but they could be as I’m not out there 24/7. I’m going to give him another check to see if his butt area has changed.

Harris Farms Nurture Right 360 Incubator is AMAZING!

I forgot: I’m hatching eggs from my own flock. I have a RIR roo and both barred rock hens and RIR hens. I also have a Wyandotte, Easter egger and a black star hen but I try to not hatch those eggs. Both the Wyandotte and the Easter egger don’t breed often with the roo (they all don’t like each...

Harris Farms Nurture Right 360 Incubator is AMAZING!

The first 18 days, up to lockdown are dry hatched in that I don’t add any water to the incubator at all. Humidity is whatever it is due to my overall house humidity. Right now that’s in the upper 20s. Once lockdown is reached I candle the eggs (I used to candle a few times but found I was too...

Red Raised Area on Rooster’s Butt Below Vent

Hi. I did a complete flock butt feather check for dry clinging poop. Only a few hens needed to be hand cleaned. But when I checked the rooster I saw he had a red irritated looking patch of skin below his vent. The area around the feather follicles was raised a bit too. I did not see any lice or...

Harris Farms Nurture Right 360 Incubator is AMAZING!

I’m doing dry hatches recently. It was too hard to maintain any consistency when I tried ‘wet’ hatches. My first dry hatch did really well. Best hatch rate ever and again, so easy. Most recent hatch rate was lower at 12 out of 16 eggs that made it to lockdown. I’ve got a new hatch just started...
