Cockerel suddenly aggressive after I was gone for a week

Yeah, the more I try to read on this the more I’m aware that there seem to be two camps- those who don’t socialize/pet the rooster bc they get too familiar/comfortable and may challenge, and those who believe in a lot of interaction. It’s interesting. And then just throwing treats to them not...

Cockerel suddenly aggressive after I was gone for a week

Thank you for the additional advice re: rehoming. I am starting the process. I might have a new roo in my current chicks, time will tell! They are bantam Cochins so I expect wouldn’t be super predator wise, but hopefully would have a good temperament.

Thank you both for responding. This is my first go round with a roo and darn if it isn’t heartbreaking because he was so great for a while.

Cockerel suddenly aggressive after I was gone for a week

A cockerel was abandoned at my house earlier this summer. I’m not sure how old, he was pretty big but he wasn’t crowing yet. He was very endearing and not at all aggressive toward us so I decided to keep him, and integration with my 7 hens and 3 chicks being raised by a broody girl was going...

Mama hen is done, will babies need heat at night?

My broody mama with 3 adopted babies has now laid an egg and last night she slept on the roost instead of on the ground nest with her babes. I haven't seen her peck them away yet, but yesterday she was spending more time away from them than had been normal. The chicks are 4.5 weeks old, some...

Can adoptive mamas still want to sit on eggs??

Very interesting, I'll keep them in mind! Thanks!

Can adoptive mamas still want to sit on eggs??

Oh my goodness, I've never heard of those!

Can adoptive mamas still want to sit on eggs??

Thank you! This is helpful, though I'm a little unclear about the "100% brood fully integrated into the flock with a broody hen." Does that mean I can take the fence down and let everyone have access to one another? My little mixed flock's pecking order sometimes confuses me as I'm not sure...

Can adoptive mamas still want to sit on eggs??

I have a one year old broody girl, Winnie, who I was unable to break after 2 weeks of gentle attempts (no cold water dunks or broody jail), and so this past Friday I gave her 3 babies from the local farm supply store. (Chicken math is for real.) I feel like she accepted the three babies, and I...

    Pullet combs with white areas?

Oh my! It looks like maybe that could be it. How would they have gotten it?? From my soil or something?

    Pullet combs with white areas?

Hi! I have 5 pullets of various breeds and for the last few weeks I’ve been questioning their combs, especially the barred rock and sapphire olive egger who have the most prominent combs. I know paler combs are common around their age, but what about combs reddening unevenly? With sections of...

    Couple behavior questions

Yes such an easy solution to keeping a chair out there but not having to sit on poop. Thanks :)

    Couple behavior questions

That is a really good idea but usually if I go out that way they come out from under to see me. And then they may just start going back-and-forth in and out. I think what you’re getting at though is that there’s probably more predator activity than I realize, and you’re probably right.

    Couple behavior questions

That’s good to hear! I bet that is quite a surprise to them at first haha.
