How warm is your cookie tin water heater? Looking for

That is a valid point and risk. I will be especially careful when placing the full container back on the block. Once it is in place, it locks under the board at the back and is secured by the elastic band, so the only time it could spill is when I set it on the block. Thanks for the tip, though...

How warm is your cookie tin water heater? Looking for

Thanks, poppster. It really is a nice light at night. The chickens kinda hang around it a lot, whether they are drinking water or not. I have a screened window in the coop and though it is over a hundred feet away, it has a nice glow even through the window. It isn't real bright and I don't...

You know you love your chickens when...

I probably talk to our chickens more than I talk to the family. It was difficult at first to not get upset with the ruler of the roost. As we have several different breeds, they are different colors and different personalities. But this one, a white chicken, took control very early. When they...

How warm is your cookie tin water heater? Looking for

I am not using a cookie tin, but have a 40 watt round bulb in a concrete block with one of the plastic gravity feed containers. The water container is secured by twine with an elastic band which holds it in place. The climate here in Tennessee is usually mild. So far this year the coldest it has...

How can I winterize this nipple waterer?

I definitely will not argue a safety issue and if you feel it is such, don't even consider it. Personally, I believe the warmer I built is safe for us. The socket is attached to a board, surrounded by a concrete block, and contains only a forty watt bulb. Additionally, it is on a GFCI protected...

    Interested in selling eggs

We have 22 laying hens right now, with ten more that should start laying by spring. They are various breeds that I bought for my granddaughter as newborn chicks. The collection rate has been as high as 21 and is still averaging about 14 or so, even though it is winter. A few folks had bought...

How can I winterize this nipple waterer?

I installed a DIY system using PVC pipe with nipples several months ago. It has worked well to an extent, though the hens spill a lot of water when drinking. It is still quite worthwhile because at least the water is always clean. Now, to address the point at hand: keeping the water from...

Intro: Hi, I am John, residing in East Tennessee.

I retired almost three years ago and am busier than ever. My avatar is my granddaughter that I purchased baby chicks for in the Spring. We now have 23 of mixed breeds and a few have begun laying. Appreciate the opportunity to learn from other members and hope to share our experiences also.
