Are you sure they're picking themselves? We have 8 chickens, 4 different varieties...2 of them are BR and they just started molting the other day (their first). All of the feathers on their rear/belly are missing on both birds while all of the others are perfectly fine. Our coop is dusted...
In our coop pine shavings (we buy the blocks from Tractor Supply for less than $5). In our run which is covered, we use a mix from our local garden nursery - it's branches and leaves run through the chipper but it's not mulch yet (no chemicals added). A "scoop" runs us $10. The girls love to...
I, too, was confused by thinking I needed to keep them inside for longer but read so many threads of people that brood outside...as long as the temperatures support it and you're ready for it, go for it I moved my 8 girls outside to their coop last week at 2 weeks old...at that point they were...
We're looking forward to the egg dishes we'll be making once the girls start producing in the fall so we went with egg themed names:
Sunny (sunny-side-up)
Frita (frittata)
Benny (eggs benedict)
Foo (egg foo young)
Merri (meringue)
Omie (omelette)
Dev (deviled eggs)
Sou (souffle)
I just put my girls outside in their coop today - they're just 2 weeks old but growing very fast. They were running out of room in their brooder and the temps outside now are good - last week it was in the 100s but today it was in the 80s. If it gets hot again, I'll just turn on the fan I have...
One of my girls had some dried poo on her a few days ago. Tried a wet paper towel but it didn't work. So I took a small bowl with warm water and dunked her but for a few moments. I was able to remove most of it and just used some school safety scissors to get the rest. Then I was nervous...
My brooder is a large size plastic storage tub with the lid cut away and fencing taped/tied on...allowing for ventilation and the heat lamp while keeping the girls in their brooder. I've been using pine shavings since the beginning and my girls love it - even at 9 days old they like to nest and...
This is very similar to what we made for our 8 chicks that are just 9 days old now. Lots of room to roam! But my lamp is on the outside of the brooder...as they get older, they like to jump/fly so you may end up moving it to outside the brooder.
Good luck!
New "chick momma" here, too. My girls are just 9 days old today - shipped from mypetchicken.com. I was so nervous when I picked up the chirping/moving box from the post office! But when I got home and opened it up, they were all OK. So far, so good. Just had one girl a couple of days ago...
