    Mixing breeds into the flock

After losing my fluffy LO I am looking to add perhaps two new girls. I currently have I believe a Cream Legbar who is a bit fussy/bossy, a Cinnamon Queen and we think a Sapphire Olive Egger. Thinking of adding a RIR, and a Golden Laced Wyandotte or EE. Looking for good egg layers, able to stand...

Turning sadness to a learning experience

Thank you. It has been a harsh learning experience. I never realized how fragile chickens are. I won’t give up, these girls deserve a great life and we will keep learning and be more observant for anything out of character so we can act more quickly.

Turning sadness to a learning experience

Thank you. I pray we won’t need to deal with this again for a good while but it’s good to know this exists.

Turning sadness to a learning experience

Thank you. The vet who was kind enough to talk me through the various checks as I was trying to care for her seems to think that as well.

Turning sadness to a learning experience

Thank you. It is because we develop a bond with these girls. I have no issue dispatching a rodent, or a rabbit but cried when I found her motionless. I still tear up and pray she didn’t suffer because of our naivety or unintentional negligence. I’m monitoring my other girls so closely now for...

Turning sadness to a learning experience

I became a chicken mama to 4 pullet girls last October (Cream Legbar, Cinnamon Queen, Sapphire Olive Egger, Lavender Orpington). The CL started laying in December, The CQ and SOE in Jan while the LO started in Feb. Mid March the LO laid a huge double yolk (looked like the size of a duck egg), I...

Comment by 'JN_CO2022' in article 'Chicken Laying Soft Eggs'

New chicken mama as of 10/2022. I have a 6mo+ Sapphire Olive Egger who has been laying soft eggs lately (about 2weeks). She is the 3rd to start laying. She does occasionally lay a proper egg but the next ones are soft. I have 4 mixed breeds all roughly the same age. The rest are not having this...

    It’s about clucking time? :)

I’ve read and heard about the delay in egg laying. I was sure getting my girls as pullets in the fall that it would be spring before we saw any eggs. The EE laid her 1st egg the morning of our -37F Polar freeze. 🥶❄️💨 About 2 weeks later the CQ began to lay even with the freezing temps. These two...

    It’s about clucking time? :)

My ladies are now about 27 weeks and are all laying. Karen the EE was the first, Henrietta the CQ 2nd, Blue the SOE was 3rd, and Willow the LO is the most recent to start paying rent. Of course Ms. Karen will not be out done and has just upped her game. 😅

Review by 'JN_CO2022' in article 'Table Scraps and Leftovers for Chickens'

Very informative, thank you for sharing. I am curious about no raw meat. What about bones that may have some raw meat? I sometimes have knuckle bones that may have crawled to the bottom of my freezer. Once thawed, doggo gets his share but I wonder if it’s ok for the girls?

    ISO Colorado Coop/Run design ideas

That was a concern especially since I have a lavender Orpington. I just measured and the current roost is 21” above the floor of the coop, 11” from the roost to the top of the coop. Dropping the roost to 16” will require some slight modifications however, it will also put it at the top front of...

    ISO Colorado Coop/Run design ideas

I read up on coop ventilation and think I’d better add some. Location is SE Denver Suburbs. We get plenty of snow and very high winds (sometimes it feels like nature is trying to blow us to Kansas). Summers can be hot, we also get monsoon and hail/tornado seasons. Basically, anything Mother...

First-time chicken raiser, wanting to show off my coop (quite proud of it!) :)

That is so cool! Love the chickens, what breed are they? I’m a newbie too with a small flock of 4. Wish we had more space to expand.
