    Sick quail

Thank you @Nabiki for the feed info. I've had a look and can't really find a feed that obviously meets those requirements so am thinking about mixing some high protein starter feed with the Heygates going forward. Things are not looking good this morning for my quail... Having spent more time...

    Sick quail

Also to add that she has laid an egg in the last few hours and has done a poo which looks smaller and darker than usual.

    Sick quail

Oh that's good to know about Heygates. Is there a different feed you'd recommend? (I'm in the UK) I've attached some pics. It's just one of her eyes that she seems to prefer keeping closed, although she is opening it (pic of both open and closed attached and also the other side). Thank you for...

    Sick quail

Thank you for your reply. I have 7 quail in a 7ft x 3ft shed. They're on deep litter - mainly top soil and hemp chippings with some little shelters around. They have an outside run which is soil / grass. I feed them Heygates quail breeder pellets. I got 4 new quail in July last year and I...

    Sick quail

My quail Violet is just over 3 years old now. Overnight, she has become lethargic and slow and she looks really scruffy. One eye is quite swollen. She has been hiding away and I have separated her from the others who have been harassing her this morning. Is there anything that I could do to help...

New quail - how to condition them up?

Thanks for the advice, I have ordered in some higher protein feed. Do they look like the feathers will grow back ok?

New quail - how to condition them up?

Thank you for the replies. The new ones are 2x Japanese and 2x Italian. I have been feeding them on Heygates Quail Breeder Pellets which are 19.5% protein. I also have some mealworms which I thought might fatten them up a bit but I obviously won't give very many of those. Here are some pics...

New quail - how to condition them up?

I had 3 quail hens already and at the weekend, I got 4 more (all hens). They're about 6 weeks old. They were in quite a crowded pen with males and pheasant chicks and they are quite skinny and missing the feathers on their backs. I think this might be due to overcrowding rather than mites but I...

How to stop quails dying from egg issues

I've never used supplemental lighting, they just have natural daylight. They're pets more than anything so not bothered about a drop in egg production over the winter. Would supplemental lighting make egg issues more or less likely? Could stress be a factor? There is some building work going on...

How to stop quails dying from egg issues

Thank you for your replies. They are coturnix and I already give them fine oyster shell and chick grit but I will try calcium citrate!

How to stop quails dying from egg issues

I have lost 2 quails in the last month from what I think are egg issues. For the first one, she was a bit quiet for a couple days and then I found her dead with a bloody rear end. Then today, I have found another one dead with a malformed egg having just come out and blood all over her rear end...

    Tunnel for quail?

Yes, I always send them back in at night. Usually, a few taps on the side of the run sends them back inside and then I close the door. If I'm late in going out, they are sometimes nestled down for the night but my run has a door on the side so I stick my arm in and shoo them back in - I have a...

    Tunnel for quail?

@keren25 here are some pics. The quails are ok with the little hop into the connecting part but one of them in particular needs the ramp back into the shed which would otherwise be a bit more of a jump. I hope this helps and good luck with your set-up!

Can quail have too much space?

Here are some pics. The run is this: https://www.omlet.co.uk/shop/guinea_pig_products/zippi_guinea_pig_run_and_playpen_accessories/25502/zippi_guinea_pig_run_with_roof_and_underfloor_mesh_-_single_height/ with 1/2 inch mesh over the top. The wire is quite thick and galvanised - I've had it a...

Can quail have too much space?

When I first got my quail, I had 6 in a 21 square foot area and I had some problems with fighting - I think because I didn't have enough hidey places and one of them was stressed and frightened. I think having wide open spaces could frighten them but if you had hidey places / bushes etc, the...
