No I haven't, but I probably boil about half the eggs that I get (I love egg mayo on toast!) and the lumps are quite distinctive, they dont mash like normal yolk. I feel that I would notice them if they were there, but I think I will now start analysing all the boiled eggs before I eat them to...
Thank you for the correction. I thought I had read that they pop up every now and again when the hens are laying heavily (as I believe is true for shell-less eggs) and don't always mean an infection - it can just be inflamation - but you are saying that it always means an infection? In which...
No, the 2 chickens are not genetically related although the same breed - D'Uccle or Millies. But I should add to the story, that the hen that died also produced a few eggs with distinct lumps in the yolk, and one shell-less egg, in the few months leading up to her death. I spotted the lumps by...
Am posting this for general discussion and possibly it might help others pick up problems early....
I have a hen who is currently churning out the eggs in anticipation of going broody (not that she ever really does - last year she sat on the nest for 2 days then got bored and wandered off and...
The guranteed way to sex them is to live in an area where you cant have boys. All the chicks that you fall in love with because they are adventurous, inquisitive, interactive, fun and playful will turn out to be males. All the ones that are a bit boring and dont do much and that you dont love so...
Hi Erin
This reply is old but am posting here for the record and future people who come across it. My chook also had sourcrop (I think they all get it at some point!) and I fed her Canesten vaginal pessaries and it worked! Ive tried a range of antifungals and they didn't work where as this did...
Mix it with yoghurt, preferably greek - my chooks turn their nose up at ordinary natural yoghurt or flavoured ones, but adore the Jalna natural greek mixed with crumble dust. I soak the dust in water first to make it soft, then stir through generous amounts of greek yoghurt. Apparently yummy!
Hi Birdigo Im in Perth and currently also battling sourcrop. I find that for some reason I haven't identified every September I get a run of sourcrop or respiratory infections - it seems to be the combination of the weather warming up and the ground still being wet that triggers something.
I...
The picture you supplied looks like the heat lamp is overhead, is that the case? And yes it is to one side but it's on the long side, so the chicks only have the width of the container to move away from it if they need to, which actually isnt very much. If you had the heat lamp on she short...
Yeah, mine dont look like that, in this pic you can actually see the individual beasts but all i can see is black. So mites maybe...posted the above before seeing this. Either way, I think selemectin works for both so i will dose them up and apply oil to afected areas.
So, just grabbed one of the hens - she didnt have any black a few days ago (yesterday even maybe?) but she has a blob of it now in the end of one of the points of her comb. The area immediately round the black blob is pale like the blood is being sucked out, while the rest of her comb is pink. I...
Hmm, he is the one chook that hates being handled, I have to spend 10mins chasing himand there is alot of crowing and swearing invovled. May try the other roo first!
So, i just looked up stick fast fleas and yes they are know to be a problem in Perth in summer and yes, the pictures look just like my chooks face. Ivermectin apparently work so i will dose them with selemectin (Revolution for dogs). Do you think that the 2 lumps at the back of his comb are...
