A little worried about the coming wind chills

Wow it stayed at 28! That’s amazing… my coop I feel might be too big for the amount of chickens I have. And maybe that’s why it got so cold…It’s partially insulated but it’s a walk-in coop about 6x10. I have 6 hens… we are going to work on fully insulating it this spring. My automatic door...

A little worried about the coming wind chills

I’m in the same boat right now and I’m not sure what to do!! My thermometer is reading 18 in the coop… I have a radiant heater too, but I don’t think it will be able to keep up with these temps (I’m in Massachusetts). If anyone has an idea of what temperature is too cold I would appreciate it...

    Jumping worms...

Update: so after digging around this morning I did find one jumping worm. It took me a little bit to find... does one mean an infestation? Still hoping someone out here has more info on if it's safe for chickens to eat them.

    Jumping worms...

Thank you for your response! I would never introduce jumping worms, and to be honest I'm not sure if I actually do have them. I will have to investigate further when I get home. I did notice the last time I let them out they caught numerous worms without trying much. So it got me thinking I...

    Jumping worms...

Thanks for the info, my concern is more about heavy metals from ingesting jumping worms not a parasitic problem.

    Jumping worms...

So are jumping worms bad for chickens? I'm not entirely sure I have them but I do let my flock out from time to time and they seem to catch quite a few worms. There is very little info out there, one article says that they may store heavy metals in their bodies and the chickens can pass it to...

    22 week old barred rocks

I bought 6 pullets and recently posted a picture of them and someone insisted I had some roosters. What do you think. I thought they were all hens.

Good to know! I actually switched them to layer feed, then read that you shouldn't until they lay so switched back to grower....

At what age did your barred rock start laying??

My barred rock are about 22 weeks... I was hoping to have eggs by now. They are all large and healthy looking with red combs and wattles. When I Google it, it says 18-20 weeks. At what age did your barred rocks start laying, and any tips to get them going?
