I could try! It’s basically a converted 6x4 garden shed, with some polystyrene (styrofoam?) insulation, and an outdoor 5x4 flight that the finches access from an opening in a wired window, and the button quail could access from a pophole at ground level. But we were thinking of keeping that shut...
We’ve raised four button quail from eggs we bought by post. We think they’re ready to be moved out of their cage into the outside aviary where we have our zebra finches.
Do we continue feeding them with the turkey starter crumb they’ve been on, or will they be ok to start eating fallen finch seed?
Thanks for this. Re-assuring!
My pea chicks, a bit older, are still going under their mother's wings on the perch...guineas more independent, took me by surprise.
Had a broody hen, so bought some guinea eggs. Now have four three-week old guinea chicks which have been brooded by their foster mother. Tonight they’re not under her but perched tightly together in a row on a perch in the coop. Their decision I suppose, but…Will they be OK? (I’m in the UK)
Used an old Octagon 10 just a few weeks ago and successfully hatched some button quail.
Need to use it again, and although it’s warming up the red light isn’t coming on at all.
Does this mean the thermostat has broken, or could just the light component
have failed?
Five chicks have hatched, presumably yesterday, but saw them following the hen this morning. Four eggs still in the nest. She keeps going back to them, rearranging them etc…but was off the nest for some time today as well and they felt cold. Should we remove them? I’m worried she might keep...
I think I was encouraged by the fact that she laid them here despite the move, and the third one was intentionally in the nest box alongside where I'd placed the first two (even if those had just been dropped, as it were).
there was a broody hen a few days ago, but I had to move her as part of...
Well, the run is about 240 sq.feet and the housing about the same. So we think/hope that's just about enough space.
In the past when we had peafowl we let them out , but it was endless trouble, and the village where we live is much busier now than it used to be, so I don't think we'll be...
My next newbie question:
The peahen we got last week laid an egg on the ground just an hour or two after being introduced to the run.
By the end of the day I'd finished clearing out the old stable and moved them in there, and she laid another egg in a dark corner the next day. So I sorted out a...
I’ve recently joined this friendly community, having been given a pair of peafowl by my wife for my birthday! We’ve kept them before, many years ago, and even raised a few, but after we sadly lost the last of them, just used the covered run and the old stable to which it was attached for the...
