    Feeding Pellets?

I use pellets but am buying crumbles today. Doesn't seem to matter anymore about waste, they seem to be the same to me. Since moving Doves keep getting into the chicken area and eat seems like more than they do - not much I can do about it.

What do you feed your 3-4 month old chickens?

I feed my crumbles, Purina Layena Sunfresh recipe. They free range around the backyard and eat whatever they want out there. I have 3 other adults (2 hens & a Bantam rooster) and I usually feed them Omega -3 Plus but w/ the babies they're all on the same thing now until babies can eat pellets. I...

I have 2 that lay blue & green eggs, both w/ green legs/feet. Have a chick that will be joining them when it stays warm @ nite. Colors of feathers are beautiful, the blue eggs are bigger. I feed premium food so eggs are extra yummy!

Dr. Who, Chickens, and a $40 coop

IT'S GREAT!! If you raise it up I'd put 1/4" mesh wire around bottom to keep out critters/snakes. I made mine from pallets and that's what I used for floor and then use pine shavings for bedding/laying eggs. Has a perch but not much of one. Need to enlarge as I bought 3 chicks last Monday!

Official BYC Poll: Why Do You Have Chickens - Select All That Apply

I have just 2 Easter Eggers or maybe Americanas and 1 Bantam rooster who was a rescue. They are funny and give me beautiful eggs. The little guy is just a trip, he crows and afterwards is an "ahh" sound which is hysterical. If he gets upset he walks around talking to himself.....he is just too...

How do you heat your coops

what a nice coop you have! I haven't heated much due to this community's help. Since they are in a small space and it's dark during the day, I do put in a light bulb so they have some sort of "daylight", they seem to like it, they move to other side of coop if it's too warm.....put in a 65 W...

Please, everyone post pictures of your shabby and chic coops here

I used pallets. Easy and cheap - insulated with foamboard I had laying around...put screening over it or they will eat it. used 1/4" mesh on floor and use pine shavings on the floor, they can scratch their own vents. Hardware was cheap - just go for it!! Chickens don't care how it looks!

How do you heat your coops

I use an 85 watt red flood light for my small coop. Don't use the mats for chickens, they will peck at them. I live in MT. and I have screening on the floor of the coop w/ pine shavings only. Even then w/ only that light they will scratch for more air. They really don't need alot of heat. In...

Please, everyone post pictures of your shabby and chic coops here

I used pallets and I had some 1.5" insulated wallboard I stuffed inside the openings, covered it w/ window screen wire inside as they WILL pluck at it and eat it!! I have it up on cement blocks - it's not fancy but it works. Keeps them warm in Montana winter and it really is cool inside in...

IS THERE A CERTAIN TIME OF YEAR THE HENS ARE BREEDABLE OR IS IT AN ALL YEAR AROUND THING? I HAVE A AURACAUNAS AND A BANTAM ROOSTER. I HAVEN'T SEEN THEM MATE BUT IF THEY DO I WON'T MIND, I JUST NEED TO KNOW WHEN SO I DON'T TAKE THE FERTILIZED EGG BY MISTAKE - IS THERE A SET SEASON? SEEMS CHICKS...

Mine's made out of pallets w/ nice thick foamboard insulation in between, 1/4" screen on floor for ventilation. I use thick pins shavings on the floor, they scratch openings as they want. They're nice and cozy here in MT.

Comment by 'jstamesngr' in article 'Composting With Chickens'

I've been totally stupid throwing all hay from coop over the fence away from them. I thought they'd get worms eating their own poop. Oh well, had to switch to pine shavings this round so will do. My chickens seem to not like "people food" much tho'. Live in MT. and they've been hiding out for a...
