Hello. I'm on the GoldCoast, back up in the hills a bit. I have 9 rescue hens (from a caged farm where they were to be killed as 18mths old). So they now have a lovely home, lots of love and care and in return they still gift me 5 eggs a day. I have 5 Rhode Island reds and 4 Australorps...
I've contacted do them to see if any way I can't get it to Australia. I have a horse and dog too, so it won't go to waste. Thank you for posting this! Cheers. jules
Hi,
thanks for your feedback. I posted earlier about charcoal as someone mentioned this as effective against lice and mites? Any opinions on this...or any other natural product to use?
cheers

Thank you all so much for the advice. I now have a few ways to try....but one thing you are all saying, is wait till eggs are cooled, which I haven't been doing! so will definitely do that. I've usually put eggs into water from top in pot (and eggs straight from fridge) and allow eggs to heat...
just heard also that if you put vinegar into pot when boiling eggs, they will peel easily! hmm, not sure but worth a try....more important though is checking that calcium level!
Hi again, just went to that thread. very good stuff. I will refer back to this when I have a larger coop one day as really like that idea and can see why you wouldn't use DE for deep litter.
I've been using DE on bottom of tray before putting shavings on top, as I clean it out every...
This is such great information. thank you soooo much! I have a small coop and the roost for them at night is up the ladder, and isn't large enough to create this environment...but one day! I'll watch those videos. I clean the shavings each day from the roost and am keeping in bags, thinking...
Thank you. it's a good start. I do have layer feed for them and shell grit...but was giving them their treat 'mash' in the morning too, so maybe one of the girls decided to eat less layer feed....so now I'm giving them their mash (sunflower seeds, brewers yeast, garlic powder, oats, de & herbs)...
I cannot see how to add the photo of the egg I have - that has a not formed end. It's like my hen was in a hurry so the end is softer and has a little tail.
Can someone please tell me how to post the photo and any ideas on why this is happening?
and one other thing - most of the eggs - when...
Thank you for your reply! and for your good suggestions. Since I have separated the goodies from the layer feed, they are now giving me 2 to 4 eggs a day....very happy with that. I'll now give them their mash later in the day too, so they do eat their protein layer feed - good idea - thank...
Hmm ok, this isn't what I found when I researched it, and seems many chicken owners use it too, so seems like there is divided opinion on it. I appreciate your view, but for now, I've bought it and the information I gathered suggests it's very effective parasitic, so I'll stick with it till I...
Morning! well I had a bit of fun yesterday. I did put a practice roost in the yard and put each hen on their and held them till they felt secure on the thick branch...then let them go. Most of them stayed on their for a minute then hopped down. I'll keep trying this. and last night, I...
Good point! I have now made up the scratch and put into a bowl with a bit of water to make it a mash. They love it! but keeping to what great advice you guys have given me and only giving them 10% of layer pellet...so just 1/2 cup a day between the 6 of them. and now I have the pellets on...
Hi,
I researched best foods for hens and this one came up....as a natural parasitic and insecticide. I have two types of DE. one is food grade, to add into their feed. The other one is for their nest...just a sprinkle in the nesting box and roost area. Do you have any other info on DE....as...
Oh my, I cannot see how to load photos here into the thread? It doesn't appear straight forward as with other social media pages. Will try later from my computer, it may be just html restrictions on ipad. Looking forward to sharing some photos of them. Cheers. Jules.
