It worked! Those greedy little chickies were only too happy to snatch the grapes right out of my hand. Now I have a much easier way of being able to grab one of the buggers when I need to. Thanks for so much for the help everyone!
I think you may need to reread the thread, I never claimed I didn't have time to spend with the chickens. In fact, I said that I'm able to spend time with them every day! I just didn't know how to get them used to being handled. I'm still a novice. I really like my chickens and want to care for...
Really? Wow, mine would never let me just pick them up like that. There's 11 of them and I hang out with them for a while every day and I have since they were hatched. They're 7 weeks old now. But I haven't really carried them around long-term, I just figured they liked being on the ground...
I tried fashioning one of those with a wire coat hanger. My attempts were not successful. I'm sure it was either my design or my technique, lol. I may just have to buy a pool skimmer and give that a try.
My chicks are 7 weeks old and they roam freely in the yard all day and sleep in their coop at night. Sometimes I want to pick one up to take a picture of it and it always ends up in a crazy chicken chase! I'm running after them the whole length of the yard and back again just trying to pick one...
I've also read that once you do let them mingle for the first time it should be while they're free ranging, if at all possible. So introduce them when they're out roaming rather than penned in. I haven't done it myself, but I've read that advice several times so I figured I'd pass it on to you. HTH!
Thank you to everyone for the advice! I have already accepted the fact that I will probably lose a couple, just because that goes hand in hand with free-ranging. They have a couple of giant bushes that they stay near and duck under whenever they're spooked. So far so good. I'll probably still...
I'm pretty sure I have 4 roos out of my 11 chicks. I want to keep the one who is quietest and least human aggressive, but my understanding is that you can't really be sure what their personality will be until they've completed puberty. How will I know when my roosters are all done with puberty...
Looks like they're starting to establish their pecking order. Have fun watching them, it cracks me up! It looks to me like they're trying to show off what tough guys they are to each other!
Hello everyone! I have 11 happy little chicks that will be turning 5 weeks old tomorrow. They are left in a very large dog cage outside during the day with lots of room for them to roam and scratch in the dirt. It has kept them safe from predatory birds and random cats and dogs who might make...
