    Drinking contaminated water?!

Is it the water that is coming out of the drain field? If it is seepage out of the tank because it is too full or not cared for properly, you should not be letting your chickens drink it. If it is a properly kept septic system, and they are drinking the water that leaches out from the drain...

Dog attack this a.m. -- need advice ASAP

Sorry for your loss. Sometimes it is what is best for them, even though it is hard for us.

Dog attack this a.m. -- need advice ASAP

Is she still eating and drinking? My thought is if she is missing most of the skin off of her back she is probably in too much pain to do either. If that is the case she will be dying anyway, so why make her suffer. I have had two hens I have rescued from hawk attacks. Both lived through it...

Our dogs got one of our chickens but it is alive

If she just has a bare neck but is drinking and hanging out with the other chickens, then it sounds like you lucked out. I had one attacked by a hawk with a good sized puncture wound that has suffered nothing more than a few days in solitary and a slightly gimpy wing. I'm sure the first few...

How to keep people away from our chickens?!

How horrible that people would throw rocks at them! I will hope that it was just some kids with poor impulse control who wanted to see them running around (not aiming to hurt). Sounds like they might be safer just running around in the front yard. My suggestion is to get one aggressive...

How to keep people away from our chickens?!

The welcome mats with rooster on them must have become too popular and worked their way into people's subconscious. Apparently, seeing a chicken in someone's yard makes people feel welcomed. We've had all kinds of people stop by our house to ask for eggs, just because our chickens are running...

COOPERS HAWK ALMOST PUT MOVES ON YOUNG CHICKENS

I was being a little facetious the first time round, but I am glad I asked because I hadn't really thought about if the hawk were just injured. Also, didn't think about what to do with the body if the dog did kill the hawk. My first instinct would be to bury it or burn it like any other dead...

COOPERS HAWK ALMOST PUT MOVES ON YOUNG CHICKENS

When talking about hawks, there are always a lot of posts about SSS since hawks are protected. So what are the repercussions if a dog kills a hawk?!?

    Buying baby chickens

We got two batches a month apart and had no problems integrating them. When the youngest were maybe a month old we started putting them outside in the "chicken play pen" with the larger ones. That only lasted a week or so and then we put them all in the coop together. For the first week of...

introducing bantams to full size breeds

I currently have a flock of 19 chickens that are all large breeds. This is a new flock so they are fairly young still, 2 months to 3 months old. A friend of ours also has chickens, but they live in a neighborhood and, therefore, can not have roosters. He is looking for someone to take his...

    Am I really Truly Poisonous?

I'm curious if it is only cooked rice you feed your chickens or if you feed them uncooked rice. It is my understanding that it is only uncooked rice that can be harmful because it will swell...but only if a large amount is eaten. My girls (and boys) LOVE rice. The other day I gave them left...

My poor hens will need hen saddles!

I did not use saddles, but there would be times where some girls were missing some feathers. Missing feathers were the extent of it though. It is hard to get rid of chickens that you have raised just because they are roosters.

My poor hens will need hen saddles!

I had 6 hens to 3 roosters in my first flock. They were all housed together. Since they were raised together there was an established pecking order. My whole little flock was a happy little system. Should it be done differently? Yes, probably, but the 6:2 ratio can work.
