We've been bewildered by our second season with our three pairs of Khaki Campbells. Not at all like the first where they were all for one and one for all and couldn't get enough of games in and around the pond. This season the boys were terrible and it was heartbreaking to see the fighting and...
Well...I was trying to get rid of Charlie...he seemed to be teaching bad tricks to the other two boys...but I'm so glad I've kept them. We did run a fence, those green deer fence rolls, down the center of the yard and into the shed McGivering with bungee hooks to keep them separate at night...
Just reporting back about the boys.....whew...what a summer! We separated them with a light weight fence down the center of the pen and into the shed. They adapted to the new arrangement but Charlie hurt himself poking through the fence to fight with the gentle male we left in with the girls...
CAN it be that simple?.....why...maybe....I look for things like runny nose ...they've always loved the water...i just assume they are all cleaning their beaks...maybe she can't maybe it's dried on like cement!
egg shell can do that....it is like glue sometimes.
BTW...we don't let them eat...
It is warming up from our usual northern buggy cool summer....but only 60 this morning. You know...I thought she was trying to lay...but standing. We usually get a nice little nest of three eggs every morning but this morning just one.
I waited and found one in the yard (Libby) and the duck...
Hi...our Khaki Campbell duck yard "floozy" is not suffering from prolapse but is in some kind of trouble where she pants and trembles from time to time. Yard has shade, Drakes are separated from her, clean water mostly and she eats Mazuri Waterfowl Maintenance. She lays an egg a day. Her two...
Thank you...
So I guess that is a NO...ducks don't let off a mating smell.
We did one day put a little food in the shed for Katie when she had prolapse. Quickly figured out to bring her in for a few days and she healed up all by herself. Otherwise the food is very far from the shed and we do...
I have three male - three female, Khaki Campbell Ducks, one year old this month.
do they give off a musky order when in Springtime mode?
We are smelling something musky around the coop. It is protected with electrical wire zapper. we have not seen any predators or evidence of such.
Still in...
I have to admit I did bring the chickens in one night so I could sleep without worrying about them...)
Which side of the bed did they sleep on
Thank you for the -9 info and your young mallards and Rouens. My cambells are bred originally from both breeds so that gives me great peace of mind.
Yep, we brought them in! -20! My husband said I couldn't tell anyone unless I made it clear they slept on my side of the bed!
Nah, just joking.....they slept in our cat's room, aka cat box - mud room.
The first night we put straw down and gave them food and water. They were like a rock band in...
I'm still wondering if those whose ducks are just fine in very cold weather might let us know what breeds or weights they are talking about.
I suspect that some of the smaller breeds (runners, calls), just may not have as much body mass to insulate them as, say, Pekins, Rouens, etc. I also...
I am a beginner too but I believe different breeds are better at staying on the nest than others. my khaki cambells are not known to be good moms.
Cold eggs do absorb through their pores, water, smells etc. so can't be good left unattended.
My duckies played in the temp pond like it was summer...
That really shows you have to watch (and enjoy) your ducks...the ice on the toe thing. I'll keep a closer eye. Sometimes I'm so busy out there I forget to watch them for a spell to see that all is well. Yesterday there was a big commotion, but my back was turned..pretty serious fright and two...
Thanks so much, Hattiegun...what a great set up. Maybe my ducks should come winter at your place
Our pond is 125 gallons and we cut a hole in the bottom and fitted a drain with pvc pipe out into a ditch in the woods..sandy soil..drains well...
but I have to reach in to pull the plug then keep...
