Aww those babies are cute! I have four delawares in the brooder, myself, and two cinnamon queens. Mine are three weeks now, beginning the "dinosaur bird" phase. One thing I've noticed about this breed, they grow really fast! At only three weeks, I know online it says they need temp of 85 to...
Thank you! Yes, ours is technically a cage but enclosed all around with cardboard. Also, it's in a fully heated inside space, so there aren't any drafts, but I'm afraid of chilling them so I wanted to see what other people do at this age. :)
They were snuggled in a pile, but they weren't complaining (and they are quick to make noise when they aren't comfortable). I was just afraid that they weren't warm enough since they weren't touching the plate. Thank you for your input!
Hello!
I wanted to know what to do about my brinsea brooder. My girls are about 13 days old and we've had a heat lamp since I got them, however, now I want to change to the Brinsea ecoglow and I'm having a little trouble. I turned off the lamp, put the brinsea on the lowest rung and nudged...
LOL! Well, that's one idea, but I think I might try the golf balls first ;) It's probably my fault, for making the nesting boxes up high, but maybe if I plop each of them in the nesting box, they will figure it out. The one that lays outside.. I don't know what she is thinking! One thing's...
Hello, everyone,
I am a new chicken owner with 6 young golden comet hens. 5 out of the 6 girls have started laying eggs, but I have an annoying problem: two of my girls lay eggs in the clean nest boxes (yay!), two lay eggs on the floor of the coop (gross), and one does it on the ground in...

Here is a pic of the coop before we put up the walls. I had to draw in the roost location, because it wasn't there yet. Does there look like adequate space to get up there, and to get to the nest boxes, or will they need ladders? These are my first hens, and I'm not familiar with their...
Thanks for the advice, everyone! Maybe it is because they are still young, or maybe they are chilly still at night. It looks as though they have plenty of room to fly up there, so I think I'll give it a couple more weeks before I cave and make them some stairs ;)
I did put an LED touch light...
After a lot of deliberation, we decided to just buy lumber from Home Depot, kiln dried fir 2x4's. Instead of posts to support the coop, we just built it up on a frame of 2x4's. We still have that pressure treated lumber, but will just have to find some other use for it. Thank you for all of...
Hello everyone! I have a roosting question for you. My 6 red sex-link pullets are about 13 weeks old, and have been in their coop for about 2 weeks. We built the coop with a 2x3 roost two feet up from the floor, and the nesting boxes at the same height (across the coop from the roost). I...
That would be great if she were a girl! It would be the best thing for now, until I feel more confident that I could handle that early-morning serenade! I still think I'll name her Fred, anyhow.
Thank you for all of the helpful info, everyone! The pt lumber in question are three 4x4x8 posts that I have from a previous project. I would like to save money by using as much leftover lumber as I can to build my coop, and luckily the rest of my scrap wood is untreated. I will think about it...
The other 5 chick's look like the typical red star coloring, copper colored head and back, and they have those little streaks down their backs- all the same, but this little bugger looks so different.
