We treated our hens 2 days ago with Prozap. Today we saw a lot mites on top of their feathers on their backs and gave a quick dusting on top. New hatch, or does the dust drive them to the surface? Is there such a thing as overdoing it with the dust? How long does it take to kill the bugs?
The supplier to our feed store shut down, so we're considering our options. We have a rooster in each pen so we feed a 17% grower with calcium on the side. Other feed store offers layer feed, or a grower 26% protein. We understand that protein level is too high for our chickens. Would it be...
None LOL They live in a Fort Knox coop and run. No outside access to the coops. And yes, as eggs get fewer they are getting bigger. Standard large look like medium by comparison to most of the rest.
Thank you. We are in northern WI. We understand that all the conditions you mentioned can have an effect. We went from 4+ doz a day last year from all 85 hens ( we lost 4 this past year) to 3 doz or less in the spring and early summer this year, and are now at 1-1 1/2 doz. a day. Just...
We have 65 hens that are laying (We have more but they are molting and 2 are broody, so not counting them). They are mostly heritage breeds ( a few amber links and some sapphire gems), 2 1/2 years old. During the summer months we were getting about 30 eggs a day, now down to about 15...
No, you didn't misread ;) Eggs are in the incubator, lockdown on Sunday. We're considering moving the broody into the shop where the 4x6 brooder pen is. But we're concerned that moving her away from the flock might be stressful for her.
Doing first time hatching chicks and thinking of putting them with a broody hen. Can we put the hen in the brooder pen in the shop, or would moving her away from the flock be too stressful for her? Also would the temperature difference factor in? The shop is currently set at 72 while...
The instruction that came with my elector said if red mites treat the coop also. It was my understanding that the coop should be treated regardless of what type of mite/lice they might have.
Does the permethrin in the coop have to be dry before the birds go in? This could be a problem in winter temperatures. We too still have barely above freezing temps right now.
We actually ended up buying a couple of the nurtureright at Tractor Supply. The Brinsea price jumped so much....we're guessing tariffs.
Just starting out with hatching so if we need to get something else in the future we'll do so.
