Muscovy not preening keratin on pin feathers: Intervene?

Gone through quite a few wraps using different method, Keeper found a way out of most of them every night. The last one has been good and secure for 4 days. Took it off so Keeper could bathe and preen but looking great so far! Not sure if I need to keep them on longer. I’ll reassess after the...

Muscovy not preening keratin on pin feathers: Intervene?

I didn’t know you could heart posts until today lol. I am so glad I came here to ask, even if it was later than I should have. I’ve never had ducks before and didn’t plan on getting them before being fully ready so I truly wasn’t prepared for this to happen. I made the silly mistake of...

Muscovy not preening keratin on pin feathers: Intervene?

Watched this a few times and settled on the “figure 8” method wrap because Keeper just pulled their feathers out from it. They’re doing just fine inside after what seemed like a 2 hours journey! Happy and back inside to relax for the night.

Muscovy not preening keratin on pin feathers: Intervene?

We had a mother duck abandon two of her ducklings outside our business because they were ill. I took them home to care for them. One succumbed to their illness, but the other (while a little lame) is thriving. Named them Keeper Bought a pekin for company and named them Haven. Birthday was...

    Underdeveloped hen: cull or not?

I received a tiny (15g) egg today. It looks like the other bielefelder’s typical egg (speckled) but unusually sized. Do you think she could have finally laid?!

    Underdeveloped hen: cull or not?

I considered this also, but it’s so hard to know who to trust these days. I don’t personally know anyone with chickens that I’d be comfortable handing her off to.

    Underdeveloped hen: cull or not?

Yeah - it sucks to watch her constantly act this way.

    Underdeveloped hen: cull or not?

that is what I’ve been dealing with for about 6 months. She was besties with my Ancona, until my Ancona ended up with an injury and then suddenly started bullying Belle. Now she has no one.

It’s so interesting to see their personalities come out. Sometimes the world is just too scary haha.

    Underdeveloped hen: cull or not?

This is a great article! Thank you so much for sharing. I’m not in any rush to rid her of the flock. Walked around with her today and would take the small chick feeder and place it in front of her to eat until Russel Crow tried coming around. Then I’d pick it up and move it to wherever she ran...

    Underdeveloped hen: cull or not?

I did mean cull as kill and eat. She seems miserable, IMO. Separating her only seems to freak her out. I would only worry if I rehomed her. She is a sweet girl but her anxiety is through the roof.

I don’t know if timid is the right word for it. Anxious and scared is more like it. She won’t even eat if someone comes too close to her. She screams (literally screams) and runs away. I don’t think that is timid.

She’s just … never relaxed. I can’t imagine she has a great quality of life.
