My darling husband. I just picked up my very first chicks on Monday. 5 Ameraucanas. The feed store I got them from posted they got some more chicks in, including black Australorps and lavender Orpingtons. I want to get 2 each. Hubby says no. So now I got to come up with a good argument so he’ll...
I get my chicks Thursday. And I’m a nervous first time chicken mama so I’m a little paranoid I’m forgetting something. I have the coop(of course) which I’m using as the brooder as well since it has been pretty warm here. I have my brooder plate, thermometer and waterer, the feeder is coming...
I read it on chickens and more.com with multiple layer breeds. Idk how accurate their information is but I haven’t seen anything contradicting them either.
Everything I have read says chicks need to be on 20% protein feed. But it’s not that easy to find. I have found it online but I’m concerned it won’t get here by the time the chicks do. Would 18 or 19% feed be ok?
The area the run is at will get rain like everywhere else in our yard, but it doesn't puddle. I don't know for sure if the roof will have a slope or not. It probably will. I can't remember the measurements right now and I am at work and unable to check the dimensions. It's a medium size run though.
I'm trying to decide doing some sort of roofing over the run such as galvanized metal or corrugated plastic or doing something like hardware cloth or netting. Our coop is at the tree line of our property. I'm not really concerned about large predators like racoons, possums, or foxes due to us...
Upstate SC here, between Spartanburg and Greenville. I haven't gotten any chicks yet, we're in the process of building our coop. I'm getting worried about actually getting chicks. I have a few breeds I'm willing to start with but all the online hatcheries are not going to have any females...
I thought I had decided on what breed my first chickens would be, but now I’m second guessing myself. I had chosen Faverolles, they are friendly, decent layers, and I had read they were good for beginners. But I live in South Carolina. And it gets really hot and humid here. Nothing I have read...
