Another hen passed away. *Sigh*
I had found a thread on BYC that pointed me to a research center that tests chicken poop for worms and worm eggs. A few days ago (before she passed) I gathered some poop and sent it in. The results came back saying there was no trace of worms, so I don't plan to...
Interesting! Her comb looks nice and red so I wouldn't think this no-egg spell will last very long, and if you can't find any eggs in the coop or run then she's probably just taking a little break. If anyone else has any suggestions I would love to know other potential reasons for this. Let us...
If she's acting normal, I wouldn't be too concerned. Is her comb bright red or slightly pale/pink? I've personally had several instances where I thought certain hens weren't laying only to realize they starting hiding their eggs! Check the corners of the coop or anywhere secluded that she has...
Not that it's urgent, but I thought I would toss up an update. She seems to go in waves on feeling cruddy, and for a couple hours a day she looks like she's not going to make it. Then, she randomly bounces back and acts curious, bright eyed, tail high, and nibbles tiny bits of food. She weighs...
The rest of the flock seems to be doing ok. I have never dealt with worms before so I'm not sure what I'm looking for, though it could certainly be something to watch out for.
I just happened to find some food grade DE and so I gave their run a hearty sprinkle and I put some ACV in their...
Hello there, I was hoping for some advice. I had one of my beloved hens pass away the day before yesterday, and now I have another sick hen. The first sick hen was acting unwell (puffed up, self isolation, quiet, slow moving, interested in food and water) for a few days. I gave her a chicken...
It's -1*F outside and my chickies are doing just fine. The first few years I was really nervous that they would be frostbitten, but they have done great. No heaters, no special treatment, I just make sure they have water that isn't frozen over.
Stay warm!
Mealworms are so classic, but also expensive. My ladies would LOVE these instead of their standard cracked corn :) Plus, they could use the extra protein at this point in molting season!

Another thought: how old are your chickens? I know when mine were young (until about 3-4 months) they were a bit skittish and really didn't enjoy treats. I thought it was so weird they didn't like mealworms...but once they grew up and started laying they would come running and gobble them up...
We got her wing back into place, however now it looks more like it is broken (compared to pictures seen online). She can still rotate her 'shoulder' but it seems the second joint of her wing is out of whack and causes her wing to droop. She is still managing to get up into the coop with some...
