    First Egg from my 5 month old Silkie!

    I'm so eggcited! Got my first egg from our black Silkie Raven today. She is only 5 months old! I got excited when she didn't come out of the coop this morning and squatting in the nesting. Voila!!

    Please don't tell me these are both boys! I just had to give our Japanese and other Silkie away to a friend and my son was hearbroken. I bought these two a month later when I knew at least one of the first batch was a boy... I don't want to have to foist all 4 on my friend. Thanks in advance...

    I'm a chicken newbie, but I read that in both of the chicken books I have. That's probably why the chickens avoided it when you offered it to them....they're smarter than one would think!

    Raw potatoes are *poisonous* to chickens. Apparently they're ok once you cook them, but I would avoid them entirely.

    Thanks for all of the help! Yep, the temps are above freezing. It hasn't gotten down to freezing for several weeks now. I like the idea of the chicks getting the right idea of where to sleep. If I move them up to the top and block off the brooder boxes, do I need to keep food up there? Or...

    Thank you! I'm a newbie, but I think they're pretty darn cute! It looks like I've got a Japanese banasm--I think Lot's o' Cluckin is right! I've looked at the Japanese pics and they look exactly like Tux.
