I took the straw out of the coop and they started laying in the nest box instead. Only problem is they now like to sleep in their nest box. Hopefully putting them on their roost every night will train them soon.
Thanks for the reply. I never thought about making two levels. Where the do lay in the coop it's pretty dark so maybe that is why. I will try to do another level and cover some if the opening to see how that works out.
I am new to the chicken world. I have two RIR hen's and they both are laying eggs but I can't get them to do it in their nest. They lay in the back corner of their coop where they sleep. I've made sure the roost is higher then the nest and I even put a golf ball and a couple eggs in the nest...
Thanks for the help. I will swap it for a 2x4 and see how they like it. Would you recommend putting a roost in the run too? I got two more eggs yesterday but still not in their nest.
I decided to make the coop more enclosed. Here are some pictures of the finished product. Please excuse all of the recycled wood.
This is the coop with the roost. So far they have not been sleeping on it or even using it. They like to huddle back in the corner. Any ideas on how to train...
Thanks for all the tips. I'm probably going to pick up my hens on Friday. I will have to give the bell or can shaking a try. We may have some overhead predators too but in a valley with 2 million I'm more afraid of a human predator than anything.
I'm nervous to let them free range because I don't know if I could chase them back in the run. If I'm outside while they're free ranging will they usually follow me?
Thanks for the reply. Look like I may add some more room to the side of the coop on the right. That way I could have a longer roost. Currently I don't have a yard for them that's fenced yet. Maybe a silly question but will they fly away? How hard would they be to shuffle back in?
Hello,
I'm new to chickens and trying to learn as much as possible. Below is my coop/run I built. I live in the city and the only predators I would need to worry about are cats. Here in the SW we get about 3 inches of precipitation a year and maybe two or three nights in the winter below 30...
