what causes tough membranes and shells on eggs?

I also am having the same problem. My husband tries to crack the eggs for breakfast and the membrane is tough. He mangles the eggs. I feed them 18% lay pellets and table scraps.

    toe nails

I have had a broody hen and when she got off her nest with her newly hatched chicks, I noticed she has a couple really long claws. She has been scratching the ground for the last couple weeks, but they are still long. Can we clip their nails, and how would we do it?

    Chickens who aren't laying

I can't find any hiding spots, and they aren't out long for their play time out of the run/loft. I also don't find evidence of any eggs being eaten.
